" Trouble " - Nia Peeples from the album Nothin' But Trouble (1988) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #35 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 3 Today's song of the day comes from actress and singer Nia Peeples , who was raised in Hollywood, where she got her first big break with a part on the TV adaptation series of Fame in 1984. Landing a record deal, Nia released her debut album Nothin' But Trouble in 1987. The "title" track, "Trouble", was a bubbly dance-pop number, the kind that Paula Abdul would later make millions with. Written and produced by Steve Harvey, the single let dance stations veer away from the endless stream of freestyle into more funkier territory... "Trouble" became Nia's first top-40 pop hit in July of 1988, while sneaking in to #71 on Billboard 's R&B chart. But it's biggest success was in the clubs, where the extended remix went all the way to #1 on the Dance Club Play chart for a week in Apri...

" Love Changes (Everything) " - Climie Fisher from the album Everything (1987) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #23 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 6 Today's song of the day belongs to British "sophistipop" duo Climie Fisher, whose moniker comes from their surnames. Rob Fisher, who was in another hitmaking pop duo of the early 80's, "Naked Eyes", had already placed four singles into the American top-40, including the #8 remake of " Always Something There To Remind Me ". After that act disbanded, Fisher hooked up with singer Simon Climie, who had co-written the #1 hit "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" from Aretha Franklin and George Michael and the top ten "Invincible" from Pat Benatar. Their first charting single was the song "Love Changes (Everything)", originally written for Rod Stewart. It got a cool reception at first, reaching #67 on the British singles chart in 1987. Their third release, " Rise T...

" Little Walter " - Tony! Toni! Tone'! from the album Who? (1988) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #47 This week's "robbed hit" comes from the R&B trio Tony! Toni! Tone'!, who weren't named Tony anything but rather singers Raphael Saadiq , Dwayne Wiggins, and keyboardist/drummer Tim Riley. With production and songwriting from former Timex Social Club/Club Nouveau members Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy, the group released their debut album Who? in 1988. It would eventually produce four top ten R&B hits, with the first of those reaching the pop list as well. "Little Walter" was an interpolation of the "negro spiritual" classic "Wade In The Water". Here's the song as performed by Ella Jenkins... Foster and McElroy transformed the song into a tale of a party-hearty roommate that doesn't keep his end of the commitments for a lascivious lifestyle, and pays for it at the end... While "Little ...

" I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That " - Elton John from the album Reggie Strikes Back (1988) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 13 Today's song of the day comes from Elton John , who had recovered from a poorly received album in the mid-80s ( Leather Jackets ) with a triumphant live set from Australia, which caused his classic song " Candle In The Wind " to make the American Top-10 for the first time (albeit as a concert version) in the beginning of 1988. Later that year, Elton released his twenty-first studio album Reg Strikes Back , a hat-tip to his legal name of Reginald Dwight. With voice-saving throat surgery out of the way, he was ready to take on pop radio again, and did so by reuniting with long-time lyricist partner Bernie Taupin for the break-up song "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That". With Elton growling out his protests over faithfulness over a electric piano base, the song signaled a ren...
