Songoftheday 10/22/13 - I broke his heart and made him cry now I'm alone, so all alone what can I do, what can I do?

Donna Summer - " There Goes My Baby " from the album Cats Without Claws (1984) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #21 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 8 Today's Song of the Day is by the "Queen Of Disco", Donna Summer , who had adapted somewhat to the anti-genre pop world in the early 80s, and scored one of her most long-lasting hits with " She Works Hard For The Money " in 1983. Hoping to build on that success, she kept producer Michael Omartian on board for her next album with new label Geffen Records, and the first single from the set was a new-wave-tinged cover of the Drifters' classic from 1959, "There Goes My Baby". Written by Ben E. King with trumpeter George Treadwell and Lover Patterson, the original went to #2 on the pop chart... Donna's version tried to update it a bit, but as much of a classic melody it was, it didn't quite totally fit in with the Prince, Cyndi Lauper, and Michael Jackson hits of the time. The vide...

Robbed Hit of the Week 10/21/13: Chris De Burgh's "High On Emotion"...

Chris De Burgh - " High On Emotion " from the album Man On The Line (1984) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #44 This week's "robbed hit" is by the British/Irish noble son turned rock singer Chris De Burgh , who had his American breakthrough in 1983 with the dramatic pop hit " Don't Pay The Ferryman ". A year later he released his seven studio album Man On The Line . The first single released from the set was the more positive, anthemic "High On Emotion", which he wrote and had produced by Rupert Hine (The Fixx, Howard Jones)... "High On Emotion" just missed out on the top-40 in both American and Britain, peaking at #44 in both countries. However, in Canada is went all the way to #11, while peaking a notch under that in Germany, and reaching the top-5 in Ireland. In a couple of years, though, he would make up for that with a song about a particular "lady" that would be a huge American success. (Click below to s...

Stevie Wonder - " I Just Called To Say I Love You " from the album The Woman In Red (Original Soundtrack) (1984) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (three weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 15 Today's Song of the Day is by one of the most successful and artistically heralded music artists of the rock era, Stevie Wonder , who celebrated his career in 1982 with his double-disc Original Musiquarium set, with two big hits from it in the funky " That Girl " and its ebullient follow-up " Do I Do ". It took a full two years for another Wonder album release, and the result was only an eight-song soundtrack with one being a non-Wonder-penned instrumental, and three tracks featuring Dionne Warwick on vocals (one of her alone). The movie, The Woman In Red , was a rom-com adaptation of a French film that was a pet project of comedic actor Gene Wilder, who wrote, directed, and starred in the film, along with his future wife Gilda Radner (who actually plays the girl ...
