Robin Gibb - " Boys Do Fall In Love " from the album Secret Agent (1984) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #37 (1 week) Weeks in the Top-40: 4 Today's Song of the Day is by Robin Gibb , who as a member of the Bee Gees with his brothers Barry and Maurice were one of the biggest acts of the 70s, only to see their careers stall a little after disco "died" in the early 80s. Apart from his work with his brothers, Robin also had a little solo success, at first when he temporarily left the group in 1969, and his single " Saved By The Bell " became a #2 hit in the UK. Robin returned to the group shortly thereafter, and in 1978 during their boom days the remake of the Beatles' classic " Oh Darling ", from the movie version of Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band and credited to Robin alone, reached #15 on the American pop chart. In 1983, Robin released his second solo set How Old Are You , and the first single from the album, " Juliet ...

Sergio Mendes - " Alibis " from the album Confetti (1984) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #29 (two weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 7 Today's Song of the Day is by the Brazilian musician and producer Sergio Mendes , who scored his first top-10 pop single in fifteen years with the ballad " Never Gonna Let You Go " in 1983.  The following year Sergio released his Confetti album, which was headed by the theme to the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, " Olympia ". While that record stalled out at #83 on the Hot 100, it's follow-up became another radio and sales hit for Mendes. "Alibis" was co-written by Tony Macauley, who had a hand in writing the Foundations' classic 60s hits "Baby Now That I Found You" and "Build Me Up Buttercup", also with Princeton native Tom Snow, who just had his "Let's Hear It For The Boy" from Footloose reach #1. Together they penned "Alibis", which was sung by the totally be...

Hey gang, it's 80s throwback time, and now I'm serving up eight more nuggets from 1981, the year Picasso's classic Guernica painting was allowed to be moved to Spain following the establishment of a constitutional monarchy there. (small things).. Daryl Hall & John Oates - " Private Eyes " from the album Private Eyes (1981) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1  Songwriters: Janna Allen, Sara Allen, Daryl Hall, Warren Pash The NSA's anthem. It's time for this week's 70s throwback, and I'm back to 1971, the year the Arabian Gulf nation of Qatar gained independence from England, confusing spellers everywhere. Cher - " Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves " from the album Gypsys Tramps & Thieves (Cher) (1971) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 Songwriter: Bob Stone Kudos for Cher for declining to appear in the upcoming Summer Olympics in Russia. Steve Perry - " She's Mine " from the album Street Talk (1984) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #21 (two weeks) Weeks in the top-40: 8 Today's song of the day is by Journey's lead singer Steve Perry, who released his first solo album in 1984 and immediately scored a top-10 pop hit with the anthemic " Oh Sherrie ". For the follow-up single he went more nuanced with the moody intensity of "She's Mine". Written by Perry with songwriter Randy Goodrum, the single wasn't a bright cheery simple ditty for radio, but a really cool take on the "jealous lover" theme... "She's Mine" became Steve's second solo top-40 hit in August of 1984, while also reaching #15 on the rock radio chart. It's one of those songs you forget was a hit but a really great record. Up tomorrow: a Brazilian musical legend gives excuses.
