twostepcub's music chart for May 6, 2011...

Hey folks, I'm still riding the euphoria of seeing my idol Kylie Minogue, but it's time for my top-100 tunes for the week. This week Rihanna takes over the top spot (and yes, I abhor the version with Britney Spears), while the Foo Fighters (pictured above) elbow their way into the top-10. Songs by Kat Deluna, Cee-Lo Green, and Alexandra Stan make the biggest jumps (moves of 10+ places highlighted in red), while former big hits by Sugarland, The Black Keys, Billy Currington, Mumford & Sons, and Hannah drop out. Link-O-Rama is in effect, so you can click on any of the highlighted artist names to go to their website for more information, music, videos, tours, and more. Right-click, and you can use a new tab or window. Is that Joan Collins?

Eleven new songs make their way onto my list this week (highlighted in yellow), and here they are with a little history on the artists, along with links to their previous work in songs highlighted in orange.

The highest entry this week is by rapper Snoop Dogg, who this time mostly forgoes the hip-hop that made him one of the longest-running successes in the genre, including three #1 hits with "What's My Name" and "Gin And Juice" from his debut CD back in 1993, and 2004's "Drop It Like It's Hot" which is his sole #1 pop hit as a lead act. He's also been prolific in making cameos on others' records, which also netted Snoop supporting pop #1's with 2006's "I Wanna Love You" with Akon and his gig on the mega-smash dance hit "California Gurls" with Katy Perry. Maybe it's the former's recommendation latter's success that sealed the deal with converting his current single "Wet" to a club floorfiller with the help of French DJ David Guetta, who had worked with Akon on "Sexy Bitch" as well has had a US top-40 hit with part-time rapper Fergie with "Gettin' Over You". Working with the "cleaner" version of the track, here they are with "Sweat"...

Five-piece rock outfit Incubus hail from Southern California, and their mellow metal has scored them four #1 rock hits, including a pop top-10 hit with "Drive" as well as their last from 2008, "Love Hurts". Their latest is the first single from their upcoming CD If Not Now, When?, their first studio album in five years. Here's "Adolescents"...

Alabama-born Ashton Shepherd matches the peak of her debut single "Taking Off This Pain" on the country charts with her latest, another cool sassy kiss-off track, "Look It Up"...

It's only fitting that in a week where this world is finally rid of that scourge Bin Laden, that the man who brought us "Courtesy Of The Red, White & Blue" and "American Soldier" (both country #1 and pop top-40 hits) makes a return, as Toby Keith's third top-20 country hit from his latest CD, Bullets In The Gun comes on, and thankfully it isn't political, which most of his best work isn't. Fun fact: the video from "Bullets In The Gun" features a former gay porn model for Colt Chad Ullery/Bannon. Who knew? Here's "Somewhere Else"...

Luke Bryan's last two singles were his first two #1 hits on the country chart - "Rain Is A Good Thing" and "Someone Else Calling You Baby" from his last CD Doin' My Thing. He probably hopes to keep the streak going with the latest from his upcoming disc, here's "Country Girl (Shake It For Me)"...

And now for something different, Mother Monster is back just in time for Mother's Day, with a track that's her ninth top-10 hit in three years (her first single, "Just Dance", was released in April of 2008). That song is quaint compared to the video extravaganzas she's produced from "Poker Face" to "Born This Way". I've heard a lot of people trashing the latter, accusing her of cribbing Madonna and being too out there, but besides a great song, having a #1 hit celebrating GLBT identity and equality, I think it's worth the comparison. Her latest is another epic that twists religious and sexual icons, um, like, um, somebody, and here's "Judas"...

Singer Lee Brice from South Carolina managed to have Billboard's top country single of last year with "Love Like Crazy" without even hitting #1. The trick? Longevity, since the song spent over fifty weeks on the chart and breaking the record for a continuous run. His latest is also taking the slow route, taking over 20 weeks to make the top-30. Here's "Beautiful Every Time"...

The last "country-styled" debut is by bass crooner Josh Turner, who follows his #1 country hits "Why Don't We Just Dance" and "All Over Me" with the third single from his latest disc Haywire. Here's the man with one of the best deep voices in music with "I Wouldn't Be Man" ...

Keeping in the Southern vein, southern Mississippi rock quintet 3 Doors Down have fared pretty well in the last ten years, scoring five #1 rock hits, including the pop top-5 hits "Kryptonite" and "When I'm Gone", and riding the last wave of the late-90's post-grunge surge. Their latest is "When You're Young"...

The next song is the only debut single from the bunch, and I really couldn't find too much (read, any) info on singer Kelsey B. Apparently she shares a name with a DJ from England, but no matter, her song kind of jams. Here's "Beauty Queen"...

The final debut this week is by French-African ensemble the Magic System, who hail from the west African nation of the Ivory Coast, a country of over 20 million people, and is the world largest exporter of cocoa, which put them in a special place in my heart (smile). The group specializes in the style called Zouglou and had a smash single in France that made my chart two years ago with "Meme Pas Fatigue" ("Not Even Tired") with Algerian singer Khaled. Their newest recruits rapper Soprano for "Cherie Coco"...

...and a very happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out there!
