twostepcub's music chart for May 13, 2011...

Hey folks, I've been "off the grid" all weekend, and finally back, but here in jury duty. Since I'm cooped up for the moment, no better time to catch up on my top 100 tunes for the past week. This week Adele finally makes it to #1, while Sara Bareilles (pictured above) sneaks into the top-10. Former big hits by Florence + The Machine, Taio Cruz, and Charlie Wilson drop off the list, while tracks by Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown, and Alexandra Stan make the biggest jumps (moves of 10+ places highlighted in red). Link-O-Rama is still in effect, so you can click on any of the highlighted artist names below to go to their website. Five dolla footlong!

This week there are nine new songs on my list (highlighted in yellow), and I've included links to some of their previous videos in orange.

The highest entry is by Bruno Mars, who has had quite a year, placing all five of his official single releases (3 as a lead artist, 2 supporting) have made the Billboard Hot 100 top-5. Three of those have gone all the way to #1: "Nothin' On You" with B.o.B, and his first two solo hits "Just The Way You Are" and "Grenade". His latest also comes with an eye-catching video, though pretty low-rent but entirely entertaining courtesy of some dancing monkeyheads. Here's "The Lazy Song"...

Next up is R&B singer Anthony David, who was born in Savannah, Georgia, but now is based out of Atlanta. He's been mentored by fellow alt-soul songbird India.Arie, and his single with her "Words" was a top-20 adult R&B hit and got David nominated for a Grammy in 2009. His latest recruits another singer off the soulbeaten trap, Algebra, for "4Evermore"...

Jessie Malakouti has her first hit with a band, the "Toy Boys", apparently made from mannequins which is i guess kind of new. Here's Jessie getting down in the laundromat with "Push It"...

Danish singer Medina has previously scored on dance radio with "You & I" in 2009, and two years on she follows up with "Addiction"...

Traveling south, Amsterdam-born Caro Emerald has her debut pan-European smash that's hit the top of the Dutch, Austrian, and Romanian charts, and right now is top-5 in the big German market. Here's the pop-swing a la Swing Out Sister of "A Night Like This"...

West LA rapper Mann nabs his first hit with a little help with 50 Cent (owner of the triad of #1s "In Da Club", "21 Questions", and "Candy Shop"), and a bit more help from the 80's dance-pop duo Nu Shooz, with a generous sample of their #3 hit from 1986, "I Can't Wait".

..and since I'm in the 80's, its a propos that the latest debut is actually a single from 1988. Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" may not have been her biggest hit (that goes to the top-3 "Give Me One Reason"), but it remains her signature and most well-known work. It's back in the UK top-5 due to a version on X Factor in the UK. A portend for the US version, perhaps?

British rap artist Wretch 32 has his first hit on my list with his second top-5 hit in Britain (following "Traktor") with a track featuring Example, who has had a top-3 hit of his own with "Kickstarts". Their newest is "Unorthodox"...

The final new entry is by Mr. Miranda Lambert...uh, Blake Shelton, who in ten years has racked up eight country #1 hits, from "Austin" to "Who Are You When I'm Not Looking". His latest is "Honey Bee", and Blake, don't worry, I couldn't care less about touching you. Blech...

Nighty Nights!
