twostepcub's music chart for September 10, 2010

Hey folks, it's time for my top tunes for the week. This week Sara Bareilles spends a second week on top, while Rob Thomas (pictured above) makes it into the top-5. Former big hits by Jerrod Niemann, Meck, Thirty Seconds From Mars, and Taio Cruz drop out, and songs by Yoko Ono, Sugarland, and Katy Perry make the biggest moves (21 songs jump 10 places or more, they're marked in red). Link-o-rama is still in effect, so you can click on any of the highlighted names of artists to go to their website for more info, to hear music, video, and more. Tap tap tap!

This week there are nine new songs (highlighted in yellow), and the highest entry is by English folk-rock band Mumford & Sons. Named for their singer (Mark Mumford), they have scored a top-10 album and two top-40 singles in the UK, including this one, "Little Lion Man"...

Next up is country family trio The Band Perry, who show unusual depth for a new act with the melancholy but beautiful "If I Die Young"...

The Swedish House Mafia is a collective of DJ's from, yes, Sweden, that currently includes three DJs on DJMag's top-100 poll of 2009: Axwell (#14), Steve Angello (#20), and Sebastian Ingrosso (#25). Each has worked with many dance act, and for their first bonified act hit, the 'Mafia' recruited uber-producer and NERD member Pharrell Williams to sing on "One (Your Name)"...

San Diegans Switchfoot are back with a song about civil rights leader John M. Perkins - in fact, it's subtitled "John Perkin's Blues". Perkins, a sharecropper, became involved in civil rights promotion through the church, and the (semi) Christian rock group honors him with "The Sound". It include interview clips, which are really relevant in this anti-immigrant wave.

Zayra (Alvarez) was a contestant on "Rock Star: Supernova" (the second season of the show where INXS' next singer came from). She came only in eighth, but proves to be the first to land a spot on the singles charts with the dance club hit "VIP", though the Puerto Rican's "Dad" is not "Mick Jagger"...

Next is the billionth hit single for country legend George Strait, whose Twang album has produced 4 top-20 singles, the latest being "The Breath You Take"...

B.o.B and Bruno Mars just dropped out of my top-100 with "Nothin' On You", but each return with a new song apiece. B.o.B now teams with the lead singer of modern rock gods Weezer, Rivers Cuomo, for the bouncy and nonsensical hit "Magic"...

Meanwhile, Bruno Mars (who is really Peter Hernandez) has his first solo chart hit after stinting on BoB's "Nothin' On You" and Travie McCoy's "Billionaire". It's got a really cool video with an inventive use of cassette tape. here's "Just The Way You Are"...

And finally, country singer Josh Thompson from Wisconsin follows up his hit "Beer On The Table" with the redneck-baiting of "Way Out Here"...

and that's all, folks...
