from the album The Coming (1996)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13

Today's song(s) of the day comes from rapper Busta Rhymes, who grew up as Trevor Smith in New York City and England in the 1970s. It was in New York that he started his music career, at first joining the rap collective Leaders Of The New School in the early 1990s. On the group's second album T.I.M.E. the cut "What's Next" was a minor R&B hit at #77 in 1993. Already guesting on other rap singles, when the Leaders broke up Busta went solo, releasing his debut album The Coming in the spring of 1996. The lead single, "Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check" was a boisterous and boastful track written and produced by Busta with "Ringo" Smith...

"Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check" became Busta's first pop hit, reaching the top-10 in April of 1996. The single (plus it's "B-Side" "Everything Remains Raw") also rose to #6 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, and topped their Rap Singles chart for seven weeks. Internationally, the single made the top ten in the UK (#8) and New Zealand (#9), and reached the top-40 in Sweden (#13) and the Netherlands (#20). The follow-up from his debut album, "It's a Party" featuring female neo-soul duo Zhane, got to #27 on the R&B chart, but stalled on the pop Hot 100 under the halfway mark at #52 (it was a top-40 hit in the UK at #23 and New Zealand at #34). A third release, "Do My Thing", cracked the British top-40 at #39. At the 1997 Grammy Awards, "Woo-Hah!!" was nominated for the Best Male Solo Rap, which went to LL Cool J's "Hey Lover".
