Songoftheday 3/17/20 - I'm having trouble trying to sleep I'm counting sheep but running out...

"Brain Stew/Jaded" - Green Day
from the album Insomniac (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: ineligible to chart
Billboard Hot 100 Airplay peak: #35 (one week)
Weeks in the Hot 100 Airplay Top-40: 6

Today's song of the day comes from the pop-punk group Green Day, whose lead single from their 1995 album Insomniac, "Geek Stink Breath", made the pop airplay top-40 in the fall of that year. It was a top-20 hit in the UK, and after it another single from the set was released there, "Stuck With Me", which went to #26 there as well at #40 in New Zealand and #46 in Australia. The third release there, and the second in America, would be a combo of two tracks from the album, "Brain Stew" and "Jaded", played as a medley "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions"-style. Written by the bands Tre Cool, Mike Dirnt, and Billy Joe Armstrong, who produced it with Rob Cavallo, it was another raucous look into problems in the youth, this time insomnia...

Since like "Geek Stink Breath", "Brain Stew/Jaded" wasn't released as a commercial single in America, it was kept from Billboard magazine's official Hot 100 pop chart, however it rang up enough mainstream radio airplay to reach the top-40 on the airplay component of the chart in March of 1996. The songs reached both the Mainstream (#3 for a week) and Alternative (#8) rock radio charts. Internationally, the single reached the top-40 in the UK (#28) and Canada (#35). A third American promo single from the album, "Walking Contradiction" (which sports an amazing video) went to #70 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, #21 on Alternative Rock, and #25 at Mainstream Rock.
