Songoftheday 1/9/19 - Now we gonna move it slow when the lights are low, 'cause when you move it slow it feels like more...

"It's Alright" - Huey Lewis & The News
from the album People Get Ready: A Tribute To Curtis Mayfield (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: unable to chart
Billboard Hot 100 airplay peak: #37 (one week)
Weeks in the airplay top-40: 3

Today's song of the day comes from workingman's rock band Huey Lewis and the News, whose last album Hard At Play really didn't get the reception they were used to, although it did score two top-40 pop hits with "Couple Days Off" and "It Hit Me Like A Hammer". While they were in record label limbo, the band recorded a track for a tribute album to soul legend Curtis Mayfield, one of the two multi-artist cover albums to be released within a year devoted to the music of the singer (who mind you wasn't dead yet). Although the first, People Get Ready: A Tribute To Curtis Mayfield, wasn't as highly promoted as the second, A Tribute To Curtis Mayfield (I know, confusing), it was the former that scored the biggest "hit". Huey and the News' acappella take on the Impressions' "It's Alright" was a natural fit for the band, who had included that time of song in all their albums. Although it wasn't released as a physical single in stores, it garnered enough airplay to reach the top-40 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart...

Huey Lewis & The News' "It's Alright" reached the airplay top-40 in August of 1993. The track climbed all the way to #7 on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart as well.
