"What's Up Doc? (Can We Rock?)" - Fu-Schnickens with Shaquille O'Neal
from the album Nervous Breakdown (Fu-Schnickens, 1994) and Shaq Diesel (Shaquille O'Neal, 1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #39 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 1

Today's song of the day comes from the rap group Fu-Schnickens, who got together in Brooklyn in the late 1980s. The trio named themselves presumably in "kung-fu" style, with Rod Roachford becoming "Chip-Fu", Joe Jones being "Moc-Fu", and Lennox Maturine naming himself "Poc-Fu". They released their debut album FU Don't Take It Personal in 1992, and from it their single "La Schmoove" climbed to #30 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart. They followed with "True Fuschnick", which went to #97 on the R&B list, but was their first and biggest club hit, making it to #14 on the Dance Club Play chart. With the success of the album, which reached #19 on the R&B albums chart, the trio set up to record their sophomore effort for the following year. The lead single, "What's Up Doc? (Can We Rock?)", featured basketball great Shaquille O'Neal, a fan of the group who re-named him "Shaq-Fu". The track was all crazy-fast rhymes, but the video did tie in the basketball theme...

"What's Up Doc?" became Fu-Schnickens' first and only top-40 pop hit in America in August of 1993 (it wouldn't be Shaq's last time in their, though...). The track also climbed to #56 on Billboard's R&B chart, while the remix helped it rise to #26 on their Dance Club Play tally. The second single released from the Fu-Schnickens' album, "Breakdown", made it to #38 on the R&B chart and #67 on the pop Hot 100 in America. However, they wouldn't last beyond that, releasing a Greatest Hits album in 1995 closing out their career. Shaq though would continue having a smattering of minor R&B hits through the rest of the decade, including one more top-40 pop hit.

Up tomorrow: Soul singer has another maudlin piece.
