Disco Dessert 9/17/18 - "Clouds" from Chaka Khan...

Since the remnants of Hurricane Florence are heading north...

"Clouds" was the first single from Chaka Khan's second solo album Naughty. Written by the incomparable writing husband-wife team of Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson, who also penned her signature "I'm Every Woman" debut solo hit, the elegant yet soulful string-laden track featured a young Whitney Houston (and her mother Cissy) on backup vocals. The single would rise to #10 on Billboard's R&B chart, but only "bubbled under" their pop Hot 100 chart at #103. Most surprisingly, the 12" single, paired with "Papillon (Hot Butterfly)", stopped short at #31 on their Disco/Dance Singles chart, though staying on the list for 18 weeks. However, in 1989 as part of the Life Is A Dance remix project album, where the C&C Music Factory guys mixed the song, topped the Dance Club Play chart as an entire record.
