"Make It Happen" - Mariah Carey
from the album Emotions (1991)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 16

Today's song of the day is by Mariah Carey, who had already scored two huge pop hits from her sophomore album Emotions, "Can't Let Go" and the #1 title track "Emotions". The third release from the album would be the mid-tempo semi-autobiographical jam "Make It Happen". Written by Mariah with the production team behind the C+C Music Factory, Robert Clivillés and David Cole, the lite-house record is an inspirational screed to have faith in yourself and your goals. The music video doubled down on that having her perform in a church as well...

"Make It Happen" became Mariah's third top-five pop hit from Emotions (and eighth consecutive overall) in April of 1992. The song climbed to #7 on Billboard's R&B chart, while going to #13 on their Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio list. Although the single and the remixes were handled by the then-hot Clivillés and Cole, the track only reached #16 on the Dance Club Play chart. Internationally, the single peaked at #7 in Canada, and got to the top-40 in the UK (#17) and Australia (#35).

In 1994, songwriter Kevin McCord sued Mariah, Clivilles, and Cole for plagiarizing his 1979 song "I Want To Thank You", which One Way singer Alicia Myers took to #37 on the R&B chart in 1982. They eventually settled for a half a million...
