"The Unforgiven" - Metallica
from the album Metallica (1991)
Billboard Hot 100 peak; #35 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 1

Today's song of the day comes from the thrash metal band Metallica, whose self-titled landmark album had rewarded them with a top-20 pop hit with the undeniably catchy "Enter Sandman" in the fall of 1991. Working on that momentum, their follow-up single would be a more musically dramatic and lyrically complex number, "The Unforgiven". Written by lead singer James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, and guitarist Kirk Hammet, the story of an enslaved and imprisoned man was the closest they got to the dreadest metal "power-ballad"...

"The Unforgiven" became Metallica's third top-40 pop hit in January of 1991. The song also climbed to #10 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock radio chart. Internationally, the single did best in Australia, peaking at #10; it reached the top-40 in the UK (#15), Italy (#18), Switzerland (#20), Ireland (#22), New Zealand (#24), the Netherlands (#25), France (#28), Austria (#30), and Sweden (#32).
