"Is It Good To You" - Heavy D & The Boyz
from the album Peaceful Journey (1991)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #32 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6

Today's song of the day is from the late rapper Heavy D, who with his backup dancers the Boyz broke through on mainstream radio with his interpolation of the O'Jays song "Now That We Found Love", which came a notch from hitting the pop top ten in the fall of 1991. His next single would be the smooth funk of "Is It Good To Ya", which also cribbed from a classic R&B hit, this time Junior's "Mama Used To Say" from 1982...

"Is It Good To Ya" became Heavy D & The Boyz' second top-40 pop hit in January of 1992. The single also climbed to #13 on Billboard's R&B chart, while the remixes of the track helped it slip on to their Dance Club Play tally at #45. Internationally, the song reached the top-40 in New Zealand (#23), Belgium (#26), and the Netherlands (#32), while it was a minor hit in the UK at #46.

The third single from the Peaceful Journey album was the title track, dedicated to their fallen bandmate T-Roy and sampling the Jacksons' "Heartbreak Hotel". It ended up going to #54 on the R&B chart. A fourth release in America, "Don't Curse", didn't reach the chart, rather the non-album flipside, "You Can't See What I Can See", slipped in at #69. Lastly, the album track "The Lover's Got What U Need" (which sampled Diana Ross' "Love Hangover") became a minor hit in the Netherlands at #53.
