Songoftheday 10/9/17 - I've been holding back my love for such a long time, nobody's come along that I would want to call mine...

"What Comes Naturally" - Sheena Easton
from the album What Comes Naturally (1991)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #19 (one week)
Weeks in the top-40: 9

Today's song of the day comes from Scottish pop singer Sheena Easton, who had transformed herself into a sultry weightlifting seductress by hooking up with Bally's Gyms and releasing her #2 pop hit "The Lover In Me" in the spring of 1989. She also guested on Prince's Batman soundtrack, and her second collaboration with him, "The Arms Of Orion", reached the top-40 in America. In 1991, Sheena released her tenth album What Comes Naturally, which continued her evolution into dance music, with the new-jack swing inspired title track as the first single. Written by Antonina Armato and Nick Mundy, the single became her last big hit in the U.S...

"What Comes Naturally" became Easton's 15th and so far last top-40 pop hit in America in May of 1991. The single also crossed over to Billboard magazine's R&B chart at #39, while also peaking at the same rank on their Dance Club Play list. Internationally, the record was a big success Down Under, becoming her second biggest single after "Morning Train" at #4, reaching the top-40 in the Netherlands (#19) and Canada (#21). In her native Britain, the song stalled down at #83. A second single from the album, "You Can Swing It", was a minor hit in the Netherlands (#54), but missed the charts in America altogether.

Sheena followed this album with a collection of standards, No Strings, and then another album of soft pop originals, My Cherie, but neither did much beyond her fanbase. Her career in the 90's was more successful on the stage, starring in various Broadway productions like Man Of La Mancha. She also became a hot ticket in Las Vegas, with various long-standing shows getting great reviews and reaction. Her most recent studio album, Fabulous, was a nod to her LGBT fans, with disco remakes galore, including the Three Degrees' "Giving Up, Giving In", which made it to #54 on the British singles chart. She currently is appearing in London's West End on a revival of 42nd Street.
