Songoftheday 9/9/17 - I want to show you the picture I drew, when I was on the phone talking to you...

"My Side Of The Bed" - Susanna Hoffs
from the album When You're A Boy (1991)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #30 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 4

Today's song of the day comes from Susanna Hoffs, who had been a member of the all-female rock band the Bangles throughout the 1980's, scoring two #1 pop hits with "Walk Like An Egyptian" and "Eternal Flame". But after they split up at the end of the decade, Hoffs embarked on a solo career, releasing her first solo album When You're A Boy in 1991. The first single from the record was "My Side Of The Bed", written by the singer with Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg, who wrote "Eternal Flame"...

"My Side Of The Bed" became Hoffs' sole top-40 pop hit (so far) in March of 1991. The single also climbed to #27 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart. Internationally, the song reached the top-40 in Austria (#20), the Netherlands (#23), New Zealand (#33), and Germany (#36), and went to #44 in the UK. Her follow-up release, "Unconditional Love", missed the chart in the U.S., but was a minor British hit at #65.

After a stalled album and a change of labels, Hoffs put out her second solo album in 1996, and a cover of the Lightning Seeds' modern rock nugget "All I Want" went to #77 on the American pop chart (and #35 on the Adult Top-40 radio format list) and much better in Britain, landing at #33 on their singles chart.  After a couple of contributions to the Austin Powers movie franchise (which her husband Jay Roach directed), she reunited with the Bangles in 2000. Her most recent solo album, Someday, came out in 2012 and was produced by Mitchell Froom (Crowded House).
