Songoftheday 5/12/17 - I love to go to the disco, see a fly girl and say hello...

"Tic Tac Toe" - Kyper
from the album Tic Tac Toe (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #14 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12

Today's song of the day comes from rapper Kyper (aka Randall Kiper), whose big claim to fame came in 1990, when the title track from his second album, Tic Tac Toe, was released. Heavily sampling progressive rock giants Yes' "Owner Of A Lonely Heart", the crafty earworm caught the attention of people who knew the rock track, as well as pop-rap fans...

"Tic Tac Toe" became Kyper's sole pop hit, reaching the top-20 in September of 1990. The song also reached #10 on Billboard's Rap Tracks chart, but telling missed the R&B chart altogether. Because the popularity was more the novelty of the sample in the single, Kyper wasn't able to continue the success, never reaching the charts again, though he continues to produce dance music to this day.
