Songoftheday 8/7/16 - Please don't apologize just let me wipe your tears away, don't mean to act surprised If it's all right I'd like to stay...

"Cry" - Waterfront
from the album Waterfront (1989)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10

Today's song of the day comes from the Welsh "sophisti-pop" duo Waterfront, who formed the act after leaving another band to make a go. Their debut single, "Broken Arrow", was a minor hit in the UK, stopping at #63.  Chris Duffy and Paul Cilia wrote their breakthrough single, the midtempo nugget "Cry", which was a surprisingly big chart hit in the U.S....

"Cry" made the pop top ten in America in June of 1989. The song also spent one week at #2 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart. Internationally, the song reached #17 in the UK.

The pair's follow-up single, "Nature Of Love", peaked at #70 on the "big" American chart, slipping in at #44 on the Adult Contemporary list, and #63 in England. They did a little better on AC stations with the third track, "Move On" at #24, but that would be their last show on the charts, though they reunited in 2011 for another little-noticed album.

Up tomorrow: Mulleted pop hitmaker is in no need of another hit.
