Rock Sweep: May 7, 2016...


Round two of this week's "music sweeps" is up, checking out the songs making their way on to the various radio charts in Billboard magazine. This time up I've got the latest hits on rock radio...

On the main Rock Airplay chart, the Cold War Kids settle in for a 17th non-consecutive week on top with "First"...

The South African modern rock family act Kongos return at #37 with this week's "Rock Pick of the Week", "Take It From Me". The song previews their upcoming sophomore album Egomaniac. They went to #1 on this chart in 2012 with "Come With Me Now". Grade: B+

Grammy-winning death-metal act from Sweden Ghost are back at #44 with "From The Pinnacle To The Pit". It's up to #13 on the Mainstream Rock radio list. Grade: B-



Hard-rock "supergroup" HellYeah also take their top-20 Mainstream Rock hit "Human" to the main rock chart at #45. Grade: C


The fourth single from Halestorm's Into The Wild Life album, "Mayhem", roars in at #48. The first, "Apocalyptic", made it to #18 on this list. Grade: C-


The alt-country band the Avett Brothers are back at #49 with "Ain't No Man". Grade: B


The "Rock Pick" from two weeks ago, Weezer's "King Of The World", ranks on this chart at #50. It's up to #26 on the Alternative chart. Grade: A-


And now on to the rock radio format charts...

On the harder-edged Mainstream Rock radio panel, Red Sun Rising make it two for two as their second single "Emotionless" jumps to #1...

Shinedown take their third single from their Threat To Survival album, "Asking For It", to #25 on the chart. The other two, "Cut The Cord" and "State Of My Head", both went to #1 here. Grade: B


Goth-rock vet Rob Zombie treads in at #31 with "Get High". It's the follow-up to his #20 single "Well, Everybody's Fucking in a UFO". Grade: C-


Heavy metal band Sevendust enter at #35 with the second single from their Kill The Flaw album, "Death Dance". The first, "Thank You", made it to #12. Grade: C+


Iowan alt-rockers Holy White Hounds trot in at #38 with "Switchblade".


Meanwhile, on the Alternative/Modern Rock chart, twenty-one pilots are on top for a fifth week with "Ride", while the KONGOS land at #24 with the aforementioned "Take It From Me"...

Bucks Country, Pennsylvania native Kurt Vile, who went to #2 on the Triple-A chart with his breakthrough single "Pretty Pimpin'", finally crosses over to this list at #35. Grade: B-


Indie-pop sibling act Broods from New Zealand arrive at #38 with "Free". Grade: B+


The Heavy, a British rock band best known for their cult blues-rock hit "How You Like Me Now?", return at #39 with "Since You Been Gone". Grade: B


Lastly, on the Triple-A (Adult Album Alternative, or "hipster rock") format, The Lumineers spend an eighth week on top with "Ophelia", while the aforementioned "Ain't No Man" from the Avett Brothers rockets in at #10...

Alternative rock vets Big Head Todd and the Monsters move in at #28 with their new one, "Wipeout Turn". Grade: B+


Canadian singer/songwriter Dallas Green, aka City and Colour, follows up his top-ten hit "Lover Come Back" with the song at #29, "Wasted Love".
