Rock Sweep: May 21, 2016...


Round two of this week's "music sweeps" is up, checking out the notable songs making their way on to the radio charts in Billboard magazine, and this time up it's the latest on rock radio...

On their main Rock Airplay chart, the Cold War Kids remains at #1 for a nineteenth non-consecutive week with "First"...

Out of the few big new entries this week the one that lands the highest is the newest from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Dark Necessities", which rockets in at #7. Grade: B

Alternative rock band Young The Giant enter at #39 with "Something To Believe In", from their upcoming third album Home Of The Strange. Grade: B-



But the song that does claim my "Rock Pick Of The Week" this time out is the new track from Radiohead, "Burn The Witch", as it comes in at #46. Grade: A-


Sassy rock chick Elle King returns at #48 with "America's Sweetheart". The single has already been in the top-20 on the Adult Top-40 chart. Grade: B+


Icelandic indie rock band Kaleo take their contribution to the HBO series Vinyl, "No Good", to the main rock list at #49, while it rises on the Mainstream Rock chart to #20. Grade: C


And now on to the rock radio format charts...

On the harder-edged Mainstream Rock radio panel, Danish heavy metal traditionalists Volbeat move to the top with "The Devil's Bleeding Crown", while the aforementioned Red Hot Chili Peppers land at #19...

Chris Cornell's cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" arrives at this format at #34. Grade: C-


Vegas metalcore band Escape The Fate ring in at #37 with "Remember Every Scar", the second hit from their Hate Me album. Grade: C


Another metal-styled band, Florida-based Trivium, enters at #38 with "Dead and Gone". It follows their first top ten single, "Until The World Goes Cold". Grade: C


Meanwhile, on the Alternative/Modern Rock chart, the Strumbellas score their first chart-topper with "Spirits", as the aforementioned Red Hot Chili Peppers, Young The Giant, and Elle King track move in at #20, #28, and #38 respectively...

Lastly, on the Triple-A (adult album alternative, or "hipster rock") format,  the Lumineers are on top for a tenth week with "Ophelia"...

Indie rockers Band Of Horses gallop in at #22 with "Casual Party". Grade: C+


British soulster Michael Kiwanuka rolls in at #27 with "One More Night". Grade: B
