Pop Sweep: May 28, 2016...

It's time to kick off the first of this week's 'music sweeps', checking out the notable songs making their debut on the various charts in Billboard magazine. As usual, I'll start out on the pop side of things, then move on later to the newest in rock, R&B, country, and dance music...

On the "big" chart, Billboard's Hot 100, which combines tallies of sales (like iTunes and Amazon MP3), internet streaming (like Spotify and YouTube), and radio airplay from all formats, there is a brand new song rocketing in at #1, and it's from Justin Timberlake, whose "Can't Stop The Feeling" from the upcoming movie Trolls becomes his fifth trip to #1 on the chart. His first, "SexyBack", was back in 2006. This new post-disco confection claims my "Pop Pick of the Week".  Grade: B

As Blake Shelton's radio single "Came Here To Forget" leaps back to #44, another cut from his just-released If I'm Honest album reaches the chart. This time it's his duet with current squeeze/The Voice castmate Gwen Stefani on "Go Ahead and Break My Heart". Grade: C-

The third single from Carrie Underwood's Storyteller album, "Church Bells", rings in at #90. It follows "Heartbeat", which reached #42. Grade: B-

And now on to the pop radio format charts...

On the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, Danish band Lukas Graham moves to #1 with "7 Years"...

Canadian rapper Belly slips in at #40 with "Might Not" featuring fellow countryman the Weeknd. The song was a #1 hit on the Rhythmic format. Grade: C

On the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format,  "7 Years" tops the chart for a third week...

OneRepublic returns to the chart at #27 with their brand new single "Wherever I Go". They've been to #1 twice on this list, in 2011 with "Good Life" and again in 2013 with "Counting Stars". This one has the best video of the week, featuring Ken Choi from American Crime Story: The Trail Of O.J. Simpson. Grade: B

The first single from Coldplay's A Head Full Of Dreams album, "Adventure Of A Lifetime", peaked at #7 on this chart. They now land at #35 with "Hymn For The Weekend" featuring Beyonce. Grade: B

Texan art-rock band Blue October enter at #38 with "Home". Back in 2006, they climbed to #10 with "Into The Ocean". Grade: B

Jason Derulo shimmies in at #39 with "If It Ain't Love". Last year he had his biggest hit on this format with "Want To Want Me" (#3). Grade: C-

As Meghan Trainor's "No" falls from its peak of #6 to #12 this week, her new song "Me Too" arrives at #40. Grade: C-

Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart, Justin Bieber is on top for a third week with "Love Yourself"...

Adele drops in at #29 with "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)". Grade: B

I'll be back with the latest on rock radio...
