Pop Sweep: December 5, 2015...


I'm ready to kick off the first of today's "music sweeps", checking out the songs making their debut on the various radio and singles charts in Billboard magazine this week. I'll start off on the pop side of things, then later in the day move on to the latest in rock, R&B, country, and dance music. And away we go....

On the "big" chart, Billboard's Hot 100, which combines tallies of sales (like iTunes and Amazon MP3), internet streaming (like Spotify and YouTube), and radio airplay from all formats, Adele hangs tight at #1 with "Hello" for a fourth week...

As Justin Bieber's Purpose album debuts in the top spot on the Albums chart, 12 of its tracks make their debut individually on the Hot 100 (don't get me started on how.) One of those, the third radio single "Love Yourself", leaps in at #4, joining "Sorry" and "What Do You Mean?" to give him three songs in the top 10...

For the first time this season, a performance from The Voice makes the top 40 as Jordan Smith's take on the hymn "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" ascends to #30. The megachurches must be promoting buying this, and lord, the screaming at the performance is soooooo tacky...



 The second new Bieber track in the top-40 at #31 is "The Feeling" featuring alt-rock singer Halsey...


The lead-off track from Purpose, "Mark My Words", arrives at #42...

 
While the title track is a notch below at #43...


Justin teams up with rapper Big Sean on "No Pressure" at #49...


While his "Company" stands at #53...


Bieber's collaboration with rapper Travis Scott, "No Sense", finds itself at #54...


His "Life Is Worth Living" drops in at #67...


...as his "Children" makes its debut at #74...


Bieber's "Been You" moves in at #81...


Yes, other albums debuted last week, including the latest from One Direction, who may have got lost in the shuffle but place a respectable five new songs in to the Hot 100. First off at #83 is "If I Could Fly"...


...as their "Olivia" is in at #87...


It's back to Bieber at #88 with "We Are" featuring rapper Nas...


Justin's "Get Used To Me" enters at #90...


One Direction's "A.M." wakes up at #94...


...as their "Temporary Fix" lands at #96...


Former "Vine" star Shawn Mendes slips in among the fray at #97 with "I Know What You Did Last Summer" with Camilla Cebello...


 The last one on the big chart from Biebs is "Trust" at #98...


...while One Direction's "Never Enough" rounds it out at #100. (there's no youtube clip for this as yet)...


And now on to the pop radio format charts...

On the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, Adele's "Hello" leaps from #4 to #1...

New Jersey native Charlie Puth follows up his #16 lead-artist debut "Marvin Gaye" with the song at #33, "One Call Away"...


Modern-rock duo twenty-one pilots take their top-ten rock hit "Stressed Out" to this list at #34...


Tori Kelly lands her third hit on this chart with "Hollow" at #38...


Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, "Hello" also jumps to #1 in its fifth week...

Adam Lambert enters at #34 with "Another Lonely Night", the second single from his The Original High album, and my "pop pick of the week". The first, "Ghost Town", made it to #17 at this format...


Justin's current radio hit "Sorry" reaches this chart at #37. Lead single "What Do You Mean" holds at #8...


Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary, or "easy listening" radio chart, "Hello" spends a second week at #1...

Christmas has come to this format, with five of the seven debuts holiday-related. First off at #18 is Seal with "This Christmas"...


LeAnn Rimes revives the Kenny Loggins soft-rock classic "Celebrate Me Home" with help from Gavin DeGraw at #20...


Train rolls in at #21 with "Merry Christmas Everybody"..


A second track from the band, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", arrives at #24...


Neo-soul singer India.Arie hooks up with jazzman Joe Sample at #25 for "Let It Snow"...


Drum and bass act Rudimental and Ed Sheeran slip in at #28 with "Lay It All On Me"...


And finally at #30 is Coldplay with their latest, "Adventure Of A Lifetime"...
