Pop Sweep: August 1, 2015...


Hey gang, I'm back after a week break with the first of today's five "music sweeps", checking out the songs making their debut on the various charts in Billboard magazine. As usual, I'll start out on the pop side of things, then later in the day move on to the latest in rock, R&B, country, and dance music. And away we gooooo...

On the "big" chart, Billboard's Hot 100, which combines tallies of radio airplay from all formats, sales (like iTunes and AmazonMp3 and the like), and internet streaming (from subscription services like Spotify and on-demand like YouTube), last week Jamaican pop-reggae artist OMI took over at #1 for the first time with "Cheerleader", and holds again this week...

Last week Meghan Trainor entered the chart at #95 with the fourth single from her debut album Title, "Like I'm Gonna Lose You" featuring John Legend. This week she leaps up to #71. Her last single, "Dear Future Husband", topped off at #14...

The top debut of this week belongs to rapper Eminem, whose second track from the soundtrack to the Jake Gyllenhaal boxing movie Southpaw, "Kings Never Die" featuring Gwen Stefani, shuffles in at #80. It follows "Phenomenal", which came in at #47...


Last week country-rock newcomers Old Dominion rode in at #99 with "Break Up With Him", and jumps 10 notches this week...


YouTube singing star Tori Kelly scores her second Hot 100 hit at #90 with "Should've Been Us". Her debut trip for "Nobody Love" peaked at #60...


Elle King, aka Tanner Elle Schneider (daughter of comic actor Rob Schneider), takes her top-5 rock hit "Ex's and Oh's" to the big list at #91 up from last week's entry at #96...


Female duo Maddie & Tae last took their #1 country hit "Girl In A Country Song" to #54 on this chart. Now they sail in at #92 with "Fly"...


Another country artist, Cam (or Californian Camaron Ochs), debuts at #94 with her breakthrough hit "Burning House"...


Last week two tracks from rapper Meek Mill's #1 album Dreams Worth More Than Money came on to the Hot 100 on their own. First, "Lord Knows" drops now from #88 to #96...


The other one, "Jump Out The Face" featuring Future, goes from #91 to #98. Also, his current radio single "All Eyes On You" climbs to #28 this week, while the now-infamous beef-inducing track featuring Drake, "R.I.C.O.", falls from #43 to #45...


(Last week's top debut, "Love Is Your Name", the country solo offering from Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, plummets from #75 all the way off the chart this week.)


 And now on to the pop radio format charts...

On the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, Taylor Swift still reigns for a fifth week with "Bad Blood" featuring Kendrick Lamar...

Last week the sole debut was Jason Derulo's "Cheyenne", which now moves from #36 to #32, while his former #1 hit "Want To Want Me" drops out of the top-10...


There's also only one newbie this week as well, as Australian "boy-band" 5 Seconds of Summer arrive at #39 with "She's Kinda Hot", the first single from their upcoming second album. Their first produced two top-20 hits on this chart with "She Looks So Perfect" and "Amnesia"...


Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, "Bad Blood" is on top for a second week...

Swift BFF Demi Lovato dove in last week at #39 with "Cool For The Summer", which leaps to #26 this time out...


French DJ David Guetta dances in at #36 with his Hot 100 top-10 hit "Hey Mama" featuring Nicki Minaj, producer Afrojack, and singer Bebe Rexha...


Another dance-y top-10 pop hit, "Lean On" from Major Lazer and DJ Snake with MO, crosses over to this format at #38...


The second single from U2's Songs Of Innocence album to make this chart, "Song For Someone", enters at #39. "Every Breaking Wave" peaked out at #34. With a powerful video featuring Woody Harrelson, this is my "Pop Pick of the Week".


The aforementioned "Should've Been Us" from Tori Kelly also slips in at #40...

Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary, or "Easy Listening" radio chart, Ed Sheeran climbed back to #1 where it stays again for an 18th week with "Thinking Out Loud"...

The Hot 100 leader, "Cheerleader" from OMI, finally makes this list, moving from #26 to #25 in its second week...


Little Big Town's #1 "Country Songs" hit "Girl Crush" moves from #30 to #29 here...


This week's only debut at #30 is another crossover as The Weeknd enters at #30 with "Can't Feel My Face". It follows "Earned It" which peaked at #13 at this format...
