"Don't Disturb This Groove" - The System
from the album Don't Disturb This Groove (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #4 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13

Today's SOTD comes from the funk-synthpop duo the System, with singer/guitarist Mic Murphy and keyboardist David Frank releasing their first single, "It's Passion" (which originally was meant for Madonna), in 1982. That song hit #23 on Billboard's Dance chart, and eventually appeared on their debut album Sweat. That album's next single, "You Are In My System", was their first big break, going to #10 on the R&B chart, #14 dance, and making their first Hot 100 appearance at #64 (Robert Palmer would go on to have a minor pop hit with a cover as well the same year). The pair released a couple more albums in the early 80s, and nabbed another top-10 R&B hit with "This Is For You".

But it was 1987 when the System got their biggest hit, with a breezy love song called "Don't Disturb This Groove". Written and produced themselves, and coasting on a midtempo synthbass that locked into your brain, the song was one of the best R&B crossovers of the decade...

"Don't Disturb This Groove" became the System's sole top-40 pop hit, reaching the top 10 in July of 1987, while going all the way to #1 on the R&B chart in Billboard. Their follow-up single, "Nighttime Lover", went to #7 on the R&B list, but missed the pop chart entirely. After another album that went unnoticed in 1989, the pair split to concentrate on writing and studio work; Frank co-wrote and produced Christina Aguilera's debut single "Genie In A Bottle" in 1999.

In 2003, Spice Girl Victoria Beckham sampled the track for her UK #3 hit single "This Groove"...
