Songoftheday 5/16/15 - I've never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight, I've never seen you shine so bright ...

"The Lady In Red" - Chris DeBurgh
from the album Into The Light (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14

Today's SOTD comes from rock singer/songwriter Chris Deburgh, who landed his first pop hit in America back in 1983 with "Don't Pay The Ferryman". However, even though his follow-up album had a killer single in "High On Emotion", it stalled right under the top-40 in the U.S. as well as in Britain. The first single from his next release, Into The Light, "Fire In The Water", failed to make the pop chart in America, but that was made up for with the set's love ballad, "The Lady In Red". Written for his wife Diane, the song became an instant worldwide hit and wedding staple...

"The Lady In Red" became Chris' second and so far most recent top-40 pop hit in the States, reaching the top-3 in May of 1987. The single also climbed to #2 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary radio chart. Internationally, the record was Chris' first #1 in the UK, also topping the chart in Canada, Ireland, Belgium, and Norway.

His next single in America, "Fatal Hesitation", missed the pop chart, but did make it to #20 on the adult contemporary list. A year later, his song "Missing You" peaked at #3 on the British singles chart. He's been releasing music ever since, scoring his most recent top-40 hit in the UK in 1997 with "So Beautiful"...
