Songoftheday 5/12/15 - Everyday I think of you you're on my mind, some things in the past are better left behind...

"Can'tcha Say (You Believe In Me)/Still In Love" - Boston
from the album Third Stage (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #20 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 5

Today's SOTD is by the arena rock group Boston, whose third album had already scored a pair of big pop hits in America with "We're Ready" and the #1 power-ballad "Amanda". The third single released from Third Stage was the medley of the anthemic "Can'tcha Say (You Believe In Me)" with the softer "Still In Love". Written by bandleader/guitarist Tom Scholz, it was recorded in the early 80s, so it more sounds fit to tie into their earlier work...

"Can'tcha Say..." became the third top-20 pop hit from the album in America in April of 1987, while also nabbing their fourth top-10 rock radio hit from the record (along with their superior "Cool The Engines"). Internationally, the single was a minor hit in both Canada and the UK.

The song was their final appearance so far in the top-40 in the U.S. In keeping with their spotty release schedule, it would be another eight years before a follow-up album, Walk On, without lead singer Brad Delp. The first single, "I Need Your Love", stopped at #51 on the Hot 100 (though peaking at #4 on the rock chart), and the title track hit the rock list at #14, both in 1994. A 2002 album failed to make the top-40 on the albums chart, and five years later saw the tragic suicide of Delp. Two years ago, Scholz with a new lineup of Boston re-emerged for a sixth album Life Love & Hope, which went to #37 on the American albums chart. That album salvaged four more vocal performances of Delp's.

Up tomorrow: the Material Girl goes to a tropical paradise.
