"What About Love" - 'Til Tuesday
from the album Welcome Home (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #26 (one week)

Weeks in the Top-40: 5

Today's Song of the Day comes from the Boston-based alternative rock band 'Til Tuesday, whose charismatic and striking lead singer Aimee Mann helped gain visual exposure on MTV and landed them a top-10 pop hit with the title track from their first album, "Voices Carry". A year later, the group released their sophomore effort, Welcome Home. Drifting away from new wave to a more darker rock sound, the first single from the set, "What About Love", drew upon Aimee's emotional delivery over echoing back-effects....

While "What About Love" climbed to #9 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, their biggest hit on that format, the single stopped in the top-30 on the American pop chart in November of 1986. Probably it was just a little too "mainstream" to stand out from the competition during the wildly fluctuating styles of the mid-80s before the "modern rock" genre really got going.

'Til Tuesday would release one more album, with "(Believed You Were) Lucky" scraping the Hot 100 at #95 and peak at #30 in 1988. Mann would leave for a solo career that would see her grab Oscar and Grammy nominations for her work in the movie Magnolia.

Favorite Til Tuesday song. Really should have been much bigger than it was.
