Brit Sweep: December 21, 2014...

Hey folks, the weekend is almost at a close, and it's time to check out the songs making their debut on the just-released official singles chart in Britain this week, the week dubbed the annual "Christmas Week" in the UK, the most highly coveted race for the top of the year. As in previous years, there's been campaigns to keep the "winner's single" of the X Factor UK take the crown, which actually happened when Joe McElderry was kept at #2 by Rage Against The Machine's "Killing In The Name". This year, although there were some valiant efforts (like Iron Maiden's "The Number Of The Beast", which re-enters at #44 this week), Cowell's juggernaut couldn't be stopped, as winner Ben Haenow's cover of OneRepublic's "Something I Need" comes in at #1. Like his appearance on the show, which week by week was outshined by former backup singer Fleur East and Italian cub Andrea Faustini, the blandest of pop/rock acts is what gets covered...

The single that nearly took Haenow's #1 away at #5 was the most successful of the "anti-XF" campaigns, with internet viral oddity Gordon Hill, aka the Wealdstone Raider, with the novelty record "Got No Fans". Like Ben's song, this was a fundraiser, this time for the Great Ormond Street Hospital....

London neo-house duo Gorgon City land at #14 with "Go All Night" (my Brit Pick of the Week) featuring American Idol finalist turned Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson. It's the pair's fourth top-20 hit from their debut album Sirens; "Ready For Your Love" went to #4 earlier this year.

Gorgon City appear on the charity record that appears at #70, a cover of the Farm song "All Together Now". Marking the 100th anniversary of the "Christmas Day Truce" during World War I, the song also features Clean Bandit, the Proclaimers, Julian Lennon, Engelbert Humperdinck, and more. The original went to #3 on the British chart in 1990...

With the exposure from Ben Haenow's X Factor version, the OneRepublic original take on "Something I Need" enters the chart at #78...

Nicki Minaj lands at #86 with "Get On Your Knees" featuring Ariana Grande...

Meghan Trainor follows up her "All About That Bass", which went to #1 in the UK, with "Lips Are Movin'" at #89...

The final newbie on the top 100 in England at #95 is Coldplay with "Miracles", from the movie Unbroken...

Cheers! And a Happy Christmas to those who celebrate....
