Models - "Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight"
from the album Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #37 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 4

Today's Song of the Day comes from the Australian new wave band Models, Led by former Melbourne schoolmates Sean Kelly (guitars) and James Freud (bass), Releasing their first single at the end of the 70s, they scored their first top-40 hit in Australia with their "Cut Lunch" EP (#38) in 1981. Two years later, the single "I Hear Motion" climbed up to #12 there. Their sound was a primitive electro-pop in the OMD vein (who they would find themselves opening concerts for in due time).

In 1985 the band released their fourth album Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight, which spun off five chart hits Down Under. The second, "Barbados", became a huge hit in their country, cresting at #2. They followed with the title track, which amped up the energy and the guitars to sound like a knock-off INXS, and finally they got their big break in America. The song, co-produced by Madonna's guru Reggie Lucas, was written by bassist Freud..

"Out Of Mind..." became the Models sole American pop hit in June of 1986. The single also made it to #22 on the Mainstream Rock radio chart in Billboard. Their follow-up single, "Cold Fever", also hit the rock radio chart at #29. The next year the band released what would be their final studio album, Models Media, and while they faded from American shores, they racked up three more top-40 hits in Australia, with "Hold On" reaching #21 in 1987. While Kelly went on to form the successful band Absent Friends (with former Models bandmates in the mix), songwriter Freud wouldn't have as lucky a go, eventually committing suicide in 2010.
