Songoftheday 10/24/14 - If you disappear then nothing will be clear, and if you go away then where am I to stay?

Julian Lennon - "Stick Around"
from the album The Secret Value Of Daydreaming (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #32 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 4

Today's Song of the Day is by British singer/songwriter Julian Lennon, whose uncanny vocal resemblance to father John helped a bit in the success of his debut album, which placed two singles in the top-10 in America with "Valotte" and "Too Late For Goodbyes", and a third, "Say You're Wrong" in the top-40. For his sophomore effort, The Secret Value Of Daydreaming, Julian went a little "harder" in sound (just a little) with the first single, "Stick Around", which fit in the radio atmosphere in the mid-80s dominated by the likes of Mr. Mister...

"Stick Around" became Julian's first single to reach #1 on the Mainstream Rock radio chart, as it reached the top-40 in America in May of 1986. Although it was a top-40 pop hit in Canada (going one notch higher than in the U.S.), the record stalled out down at #86 in his native Britain, while the album only went to #93.

Julian would wait another three years to release his third album, Mr. Jordan. While it scored him a second #1 rock hit with "Now You're In Heaven", that song would only nick the pop chart at #93. In 1991, with his fourth release, his fortunes returned in England, hitting the top-10 with the single "Saltwater" (which also went to #1 in Australia), while another track from the Help Yourself album, "Listen", made an appearance on the American rock radio chart at #31. He stayed away from the limelight for a little bit, returning for a minor hit in the UK with "Day After Day" in 1998.
