Songoftheday 9/11/14 - All my friends have to ask if I'm shattered, I say the past is the past and it no longer matters...

Aretha Franklin - "Another Night"
from the album Who's Zoomin' Who (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #22 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 7

Today's Song of the Day is another one from the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin, whose "comeback" album Who's Zoomin' Who had already spun off three top-40 hits with the title track, "Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves" (with the Eurythmics), and the #3 smash "Freeway Of Love".  The fourth release from the record was my personal favorite of the set, "Another Night". Co-written by Italian Beppe Cantarelli along with Roy Freeland (who co-wrote "This Night Won't Last Forever" for Michael Johnson), the mid-tempo heartbreak anthem is worth its weight in gold with Aretha's "I don't need you to start bringing me down" tag before the chorus near the end...

"Another Night" became the fourth top-40 pop hit from Who's Zoomin' Who in March of 1986. The single also climbed into the top ten on both the R&B (#9) and Dance Club Play (#4) charts in Billboard. It even made it over to the Adult Contemporary (or "easy-listening") radio chart at #21. Internationally, the song was a minor hit in Britain (#54), Canada (#44), and Australia (#67).

I was such a fan of this record because it had the power of Aretha's voice behind a great getting over you style of song.

...and finally, Aretha live on a TV appearance in 1986...

Probably the best song from the second half of her career, although "Who's Zooming Who" is pretty stellar as well.
