Country Sweep: September 20, 2014...

Part four of this week's "chart sweeps" brings you the latest country songs on the radio as monitored by the people behind Billboard magazine.

On their Country Airplay chart, Kenny Chesney lands his twenty-third #1 hit with "American Kids". It's his first in two years (though some of his singles deserved it much more than this one...)

Rocketing in at #19 is the return of Garth Brooks, the biggest thing in country music for most of the 90s and one of the biggest-selling recording artists of all time. Coming out of "retirement", he's in with "People Loving People", the first single from his upcoming album. Sonically and lyrically, it reminds me of a vaguer "We Shall Be Free", though the title to me at least comes across as a direct endorsement of marriage equality, and either way it's my "Country Pick of the Week"...

Another huge hitmaker from Garth's era, Tim McGraw, also is back at #51 with "Shotgun Rider". I'm relieved it sounds more like him than the bro-country shit he's been forced to do lately (Truck Yeah be damned)...
