7 of the 70s: 09/10/14 (1975)

It's time to head back to the 70s again, and this week I've got seven more nuggets from 1975, the year Manson stooge "Squeaky" Fromme attempts to assassinate President Gerald Ford.

Tony Orlando & Dawn - "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)"
from the album He Don't Love You (Like I Love You) (1975)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1
Songwriters: Jerry Butler, Calvin Carter, Curtis Mayfield

The popular trio that had their own TV show for awhile remade and retitled this top-ten hit from soul star Jerry Butler.

Elton John - "Someone Saved My Life Tonight"
from the album Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #4
Songwriters: Elton John, Bernie Taupin

There was only one single pulled from Elton's #1 album from 1975, but what a single it was. My absolute favorite of his. Inspired by a sad part of Elton's life when he considered suicide over an impending bad marriage, it is one of his most personal works.

Paul Anka with Odia Coates - "I Don't Like To Sleep Alone"
from the album Feelings (1975)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8
Songwriter: Paul Anka

The third of his five consecutive top-20 pop hits during his "comeback" period of the mid-70s, Anka somehow pulled out a marriage proposal out of a bedding preference.

Gloria Gaynor - "Never Can Say Goodbye"
from the album Never Can Say Goodbye (1975)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #9
Songwriter: Clifton Davis

The very first #1 single on Billboard's first Disco/Dance singles chart, Newark native Gaynor had the opening salvo in the big disco boom...

Freddy Fender - "Secret Love"
from the album Are You Ready For Freddy? (1975)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #20
Songwriters: Sammy Fain, Paul Francis Webster

The Tejano country star remade an Oscar-winning song made famous by Doris Day and totally made it his own.

Gladys Knight & The Pips - "Part Time Love"
from the album 2nd Anniversary (1975)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #22
Songwriter: David Gates

This song, written by David Gates of the soft-rock band Bread, would be their last top-40 pop hit for over a decade, until the late 90s saw their "Love Overboard".

Paul McCartney & Wings - "Letting Go"
from the album Venus And Mars (1975)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #39
Songwriter: Paul McCartney

This bluesy trudger was so unlike any of Paul's sunnier hits that it's no wonder radio soured on it, but it's one of his most heartfelt songs, exploring his relationship with Linda.
