Songoftheday 8/2/14 - We'll let you know we've got only good intentions, it's alright just do it with conviction...

Ta Mara & The Seen - "Everybody Dance"
from the album Ta Mara & The Seen (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #24 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10

Today's Song of the Day is from a band from Minneapolis that got some help from a "Time"-ly guitarist. Margaret Cox, re-dubbed "Ta Mara" for her musical moniker, and backing band The Seen (which included Oliver Leiber, son of big-time songwriter Jerry), released their first album in 1985, and the single from the set, "Everybody Dance", sounded so much like a funky Sheila E outtake that clubs and radio ate it up...

"Everybody Dance" became Ta Mara & The Seen's sole top-40 pop hit in January of 1986, while climbing all the way to #3 on Billboard's R&B (or "Black Singles") chart, and #9 on their Dance Club Play chart. It did better than any of Jesse Johnson's own solo work.

The band's follow-up single, "Affection" did manage to make the top-20 on the R&B chart, but by the time of their next album in 1988, Blueberry Gossip, the title track fizzled out on the R&B list at #54.
