Brit Sweep: May 18, 2014...

The weekend is finally coming to a close, and it's time to check out the songs making the top 100 of the just-released official sales chart in Britain this week...

There's a new winner on top of the chart as Kosovan-born singer Rita Ora, who calls London her home now, lands her fourth #1 hit out of the box with "I Will Never Let You Down". Her first three all came in 2012, starting with her featuring appearance on DJ Fresh's "Hot Right Now"...

In 2009, Rita appeared on the British TV show Eurovision: Your Country Needs You to try out to be the country's entry into the annual song contest, but quit before the final. As Eurovision ended on May 10, this week sees a bucket of songs from the show enter the charts, joining the second-place winners the Common Linnets from the Netherlands, whose "Calm After The Storm" leaps up from #95 to #9 in the UK, and Britain's own  entry, "Children Of The Universe" by Molly, moves up ten spots to #23. The winner of the contest, "Rise Like A Phoenix" by the bearded queen of Austria, Conchita Wurst, arrives like a hurricane at #16....

Australian "boy-band" 5 Seconds of Summer follow up their #1 UK hit "She Looks So Perfect" with "Good Girls" which enters at #19...

Although British singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran's first single from his upcoming second album, "Sing", hasn't been available in this country for sale yet, another track from the set, "One", puts itself on the chart at #20. His biggest hit in his native country, "The A Team", went to #3 in 2011...

Another young male act from Down Under, the comedic troupe the Janoskians, score their first top-40 hit in the UK with "Real Girls Eat Cake"....

The third-place finisher at Eurovision, Sanna Nielsen's "Undo" (the Swedish entry), jumps in at #40...

Copenhagen, Denmark, was this year's venue for Eurovision, and the country's entry to the contest, "Cliche' Love Song" by singer Basim, comes in at #46. The song came in ninth in the competition...

British electronica act Nero returns at #55 with "Satisfy". The band topped the UK singles chart in 2011 with "Promises"...

The second single from Kylie Minogue's latest album, "I Was Gonna Cancel", drops in at #59. It follows "Into The Blue", which came in at #12 in this country..

Iceland's entry into Eurovision, "No Predjudice" by Pollaponk, came in 15th, and it enters the chart here at #70. It's pretty cool that this clear shot to the bow of Russia's anti-LGBT stance is done by a children's music group with four heterosexual bandmates who are married with children and two of them are school teachers...

English indie-rock musician Jake Bugg is back at #71 with "Messed Up Kids". It's the fourth single from his second album Shangri La to make the chart - "What Doesn't Kill You" went to #44 last year...

The official theme song of 2014's Eurovision, "Rainmaker" by last years Danish winner Emmelie DeForest, washes in at #73. Her winning song from last year, "Only Teardrops", went to #15 in this country...(the new song comes in two minutes into this performance...)

The Maltese entry to Eurovision, "Coming Home" by Firelight, came in down at 23rd in the final, but the band got the second highest amount of points from the UK. Their song really deserved a better showing..

Amidst all this Eurovision kumbayah is Morrissey being typically curmudgeonly with "World Peace Is None Of Your Business" at #83...

Switzerland came in 13th in Eurovision this year with "Hunter Of Stars" by folk-rock band Sebalter, and the single reaches the chart here at #85...

Aram MP3, from the former Russian republic that's now the country of Armenia, had the best eastern European showing at Eurovision this year, placing fourth with "Not Alone", and it comes in here at #88...

As mediocre as Britain did in the finals, placing 17th, at least they weren't France, who came in last in the finals with only two points, one each given by Sweden and Finland. Nonetheless, their entry, "Moustache" by the band Twin Twin, makes the chart here at #89...

The third single from Bombay Bicycle Club's #1 album So Long, See You Tomorrow, "Feel", sneaks in at #92....

Finland's entry to Eurovision, "Something Better" by the rock band Softengine, drops in at #93. It came in 11th on this year's show...

American rapper Eminem returns at #96 with "Headlights" featuring Nate Ruess of the modern rock trio fun. It's the seventh track from his Marshall Mathers LP 2 set to make the top 100 in the UK; he went to #1 with Rihanna last year with the record's "The Monster"..

The last Eurovision song to enter the top 100 at #97 was one of my favorites (in fact my second fave after the winner). It's the haunting "Silent Storm" by Norway's Carl Espen, who came in eighth in the competition. Out of the top-10 finalists, neither Russia or Ukraine's entries made the top 100 here, understandably, but it is surprising that the tenth-place finalist Ruth Lorenzo from Spain didn't make it here, since she was a popular contestant on the British X Factor show awhile back...

The final debut of the week belongs to newcomer Molly Kate Kestner, who used her YouTube channel to promote her first hit "His Daughter", which comes in at #99. She's a high school senior in Minnesota who wrote the song about a fictional girl's abuse...
