8 of the 80s: 4/10/14 (1987)...

I'm back with eight more nuggets from the 80's and this week I'm going back to 1987, the year the Showboat Casino opened in Atlantic City...

Dionne Warwick & Kashif - "Reservations For Two"
from the album Reservations For Two (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #62
Songwriters: Tena Clark, Nathan East, Gary Prim

The iconic pop vocalist teamed up with the then go-to quiet storm producer for this sweet little adult-pop love interlude.

Regina Belle - "Show Me The Way"
from the album All By Myself (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #68
Songwriters: Joey Gallo, Sue Pomerantz, Wardell Potts

This was Regina's first big hit on the R&B chart, four years before Disney would help her top the pop lists as well...

Lionel Richie with Alabama - "Deep River Woman"
from the album Dancing On The Ceiling (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #71
Songwriter: Lionel Richie

Lionel reached the top-10 on the country charts with the help of the most popular band in the genre.

Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam - "Someone To Love Me For Me"
from the album Spanish Fly (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #78
Songwriters: Curtis Bedeau, Gerard Charles, Hugh Clarke, Brian George, Lucien George, Paul George

I guess this was too much a re-write of "Friends And Lovers" to be able to succeed as a follow-up to two number-one singles for the New York freestyle trio...

LL Cool J - "I'm Bad"
from the album Bigger And Deffer (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #84
Songwriters: Bobby Ervin, Daryl Pierce, Dwayne Simon, James Todd Smith (LL Cool J)

The first pop hit for the rapper kids now know as "that guy from NCIS.

Kool Moe Dee - "Go See The Doctor"
from the album Kool Moe Dee (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #89
Songwriter: Mohandas DeWese

Meanwhile, the rapper who would have a long-running feud with LL started out with a comic but sadly more realistic diatribe about VD.

Ron & The DC Crew - "Ronnie's Rap"
from the single (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #93
Songwriter: Mark Moseley

I can't see anyone taking credit for this Rich Little-esque foray into "rap political comedy". "Push Push in the George Bush" indeed.

The Cover Girls - "Spring Love"
from the album Show Me (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #98
Songwriters: Rainy Davis, Pete Warner

As the temperature outside finally seems 'springlike', I'll close out with this bubbly little radio gem from the freestyle trio.

All By Myself was a pretty solid debut album for Regina. The Cover Girls were my first artist interview when I was working at the college radio station in Albany my freshman year...they were actually pretty cool.
