Limahl - "Never Ending Story"
from the album Don't Suppose (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #17 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 9

Today's Song of the Day is by the British new-wave singer Chris Hamill, who scrambled his surname to become Limahl for his music career. As the lead singer of the band Kajagoogoo, he had a top-5 pop hit in America with their single "Too Shy". After being sacked by the band after their first album's tour, Limahl released his first solo single "Only For Love" later that year, which climbed to #16 on the British chart.

Limahl's debut solo album Don't Suppose came out in 1984, and it included a song he recorded for the science fiction fantasy film The Neverending Story. The title song was produced by disco king Giorgio Moroder and written by Giorgio with Footloose chief Keith Forsey...

"Never Ending Story" became Limahl's first and only top-40 hit in America in June of 1985, while reaching the top-10 on both the adult contemporary radio (#6) and dance club play (#10) charts in Billboard magazine. Internationally the single was a big success, topping the singles chart in Spain, Sweden, and Norway, and going top-10 most everywhere else in Europe, including a #4 placing in Chris' native England.

Limahl would manage to have one more minor solo hit in America as "Only For Love" reached #51 a few months after his first single, while in England he nicked the chart at #80 with "Love In Your Eyes" in 1986. That single also went to #28 in Germany, where decades later, he appears on a TV show for "musical comebacks". Limahl even put a single on the German chart as late as 2006 with "Tell Me Why" (#96). Since then, he not only reunited with his Kajagoogoo bandmates, but also came out of the closet.
