Robbed Hit of the Week 1/20/14 - The Temptations' "Treat Her Like A Lady"...

The Temptations - "Treat Her Like A Lady"
from the album Truly For You (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #48

This week's "robbed hit" is from the legendary Motown vocal group the Temptations, who even after many rounds of personnel "musical chairs" were still going strong in the 80s. In 1982, their collaboration with funkster Rick James, "Standing On The Top", was another "robbed hit", reaching the top-10 on the R&B list. In two years' time, Dennis Edwards was replaced by Ollie Woodson, who co-wrote the lead single from their Truly For You album, "Treat Her Like A Lady". Produced by Earth Wind and Fire members Al McKay and Ralph Johnson, the song was a fresh lite-funk jam in the manner of the various "Starr" bands (Atlantic, Midnight) out there...

"Treat Her Like A Lady" just missed out on the pop top-40 in the US in February of 1985, while almost topping the chart at #2. However, the single was big across the "pond", peaking at #12 in the UK, their biggest hit and first top-40 hit since 1972's "Papa Was a Rolling Stone".
