Pop Sweep: November 9, 2013..

Hey folks, it's time to kick off the first of today's five "chart sweeps" checking out the songs reaching the various singles charts in Billboard magazine this week. As always, I'll start off with the "big chart" and the pop radio lists...

On the Billboard Hot 100, which tracks sales, airplay, and internet streaming, Lorde rules for a fifth week with "Royals".

(As a sidenote; last week I went another rant on the fact that somehow the numbers for the viral video meme and musical abortion "Chinese Food" reached the top-40 - mind you something Lou Reed never did, and suspected shenanigans. It's telling that this week that "song" appears nowhere on the chart, not even the "on demand" or YouTube charts....It would seem that it would at least have a decline detectable on the chart. Hmmm).

The top entry of the week at #13 belongs to Lady Gaga, who is in with the second track from her upcoming ARTPOP album, "Do What U Want". It features R. Kelly, and surprisingly doesn't sound like an R&B booty jam he is proficient in. Rather, it's a robotic dance pop confection that's closest to his "Step In The Name Of Love" than anything else. Not as bad as I would think it would be, and with much weaker competition it's the "Pop Pick of the Week"...

Justin Bieber has two new singles reaching the chart, and the third of his non-album singles, "Hold Tight", climbs in at #29. Meanwhile, last week's newbie, "All That Matters", drops from #14 all the way off the chart...

Katy Perry claims the top-selling album this week (I'll cover that on Sunday), and the fourth song from the set to make the chart, "Unconditionally", leaps in at #30. Her former chart-topper "Roar" still holds at #2, and "Dark Horse" is a couple notches up from this one at #28....

The fourth single debuting in the top-40 this week is from Taylor Swift, whose "Sweeter Than Fiction" from the movie One Chance arrives at #34. Meanwhile her pop radio hit "Everything Has Changed" with Ed Sheeran holds at #37, and her country radio single "Red" drops a few to #76...

Country rocker Eric Church returns at #51 with the first single from his upcoming fourth studio album, "The Outsiders". On the "big" chart two of his songs have made the top-40, with "Springsteen" reaching #19 last year...(this is all we can get for the track form YouTube)...

The second Bieber track to enter the chart is a featured credit on rapper Tyga's "Wait For A Minute", which is in at #68. So far Tyga has had two top-40 hits, with "Rack City" climbing to #7 in 2011..

Singer/rapper and member of Gym Class Heroes, Travie McCoy is back at #90 with "Rough Water" featuring Jason Mraz. In 2010 McCoy went to #4 with "Billionaire"...

Rihanna comes in with the sixth track from her #1 Apologetic album to make the Hot 100, "What Now". The lead track, "Diamonds", topped this chart last year...

And now onward to the pop radio format charts...

On the Mainstream Top-40 pop radio panel, Avicii climbs to #1 with his folk-rave "Wake Me Up!", while the aforementioned "Unconditionally" by Katy Perry is the top entry at #19...

Enrique Iglesias comes in at #33 with "Heart Attack". He's been having a little trouble charting his singles lately, maybe they're getting a bit too same-y? Also, too, I'm a bit troubled by this music video, with Iglesias on a bridge pondering suicide, almost romanticizing it (with the open ending and all)...

Disney Channel star Zendaya debuts at #40 with her dance club hit "Replay"...

Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, Lorde's "Royals" moves to the top spot. and "Unconditionally" is also the big debut at #26..

The other entry at #31 is The Fray, who pop in with "Love Don't Die", from their upcoming fourth album Helios. They've topped this chart twice, with "How To Save A Life" in 2006 and "You Found Me" two years later...

Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary (or easy-listening) radio chart, Katy Perry's "Roar" spends her first week at #1...

Well, Imagine Dragons finally get their third single "Demons" on to this format at the bottom rung at #30...

That's all for the start of today's musical journey...I'll be back with the latest on rock radio in 90 minutes...

I really like the Fray song the more I hear of it, but that Gaga track is my jam at the moment. Who said R Kelly was allowed to be cool again?

My mind hasn't grabbed onto the Fray song as yet, but it's really new. I dunno about R. Kelly, i guess the same reasoning why Chris Brown still is a thing.
