8 of the 80s: 9/5/13 (1989)...

Welcome to this week's 80's throwback, and this time I'm back to 1989, the year President George HW Bush gave his first televised speech to the nation holding a bag of cocaine purchased across the street in Lafayette Park in Washington.

Traveling Wilbury's - "End Of The Line"
from the album Traveling Wilburys, Vol 1 (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #63
Songwriters: Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty

Such an awesome but bittersweet video, with the recently passed Orbison represented in the video by a guitar in a rocking chair during his part. A totally underrated effort by these rock giants.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - "Got It Made"
from the album American Dream (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #69
Songwriters: Stephen Stills, Neil Young

Another "supergroup" of rock legends topped the rock chart with this more sedate number compare to the Wilburys.

Chris Rea - "Working On It"
from the album New Light Through Old Windows (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #73
Songwriter: Chris Rea

The British singer and guitarist also topped the rock radio chart with this blues-rock with a lot of sheen.

Kenny Loggins - "Tell Her"
from the album Back To Avalon (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #76
Songwriter: Bert Russell

Kenny twists the gender of the classic 60s song written by the guy who also had a hand in "Twist And Shout" and "Piece Of My Heart" with a nod to his "I'm Alright" with the harmonies in the beginning...

Paul Shaffer - "When The Radio Is On"
from the album Coast To Coast (1989)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #81
Songwriters: Kevin Calhoun, Matt Noble

Yes, this happened. Lord, the late 80s. Who gave the green-light for this train-wreck with Will "Fresh Prince" Smith and the Letterman sidekick rapping. Oh man.

Grayson Hugh - "Bring It On Back"
from the album Blind To Reason (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #87
Songwriter: Grayson Hugh

I had such the hots for this singer/songwriter that got lost in the shuffle with his smooth retro style that recalled Motown and Stax.

The Beach Boys - "Still Cruisin'"
from the album Still Cruisin' (1989)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #93
Songwriters: Mike Love, Terry Melcher

Still Cruisin - The Beach Boys (Official Music... by dondocfrank

God, Mike Love sucks donkey dick. And he takes full advantage when Brian Wilson is out of his mind to put out this drivel, co-opted with VH1's Corvette giveaway.

Kiss - "Let's Put The X In Sex"
from the album Smashes, Thrashes & Hits (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #97
Songwriters: Desmond Child, Paul Stanley

Leave it to the un-mimed Kiss to celebrate their 15 years on the charts with this lil' ol' number. I guess it was just 'se' before?

That does it for this week's 80s throwback...I'll be back tomorrow with another Song of the Day and my top-100 tunes from the week. Thanks for stopping by!
