8 of the 80s: 9/26/13 (1982)...

It's time for this week's 80's throwback, and now I'm serving up eight more nuggets from 1982, the year that Scott Fahlman posted the first "emoticons" in an e-mail. :-)

(as before I've included links to buy anything on CD or mp3 if available)

The Rolling Stones - "Waiting On A Friend"
from the album Tattoo You (1981)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #13
Songwriters: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards

The Glimmer Twins go all bromantic in this timeless rock classic that the Smiths gleaned the guitar effect from I'm sure.

Sheena Easton - "You Could Have Been With Me"
from the album You Could Have Been With Me (1981)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #15
Songwriter: Lea Maalfrid

One of the best understated pop songs of the early 80's was this stunner written by a New Zealander mentored by Elton John.

Cliff Richard - "Daddy's Home"
from the album Wired For Sound (1981)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #23
Songwriters: William Miller, James Sheppard

The British pop icon revives a Shep & the Limelites song from twenty years ago (then), and had his final (so far) top-40 hit in the process.

Del Shannon - "Sea Of Love"
from the album Drop Down And Get Me (1981)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #33
Songwriters: George Khoury, Phil Phillips

While Springsteen was reviving the career of Gary U.S. Bonds, Tom Petty did the same to a lesser extent with this teen idol, giving him a top-40 hit in the process.

Prism - "Don't Let Him Know"
from the album Small Change (1981)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #39
Songwriters: Bryan Adams, Jim Vallance

Before Bryan had his own success, he co-wrote this top-40 hit for the Canadian rockers with band member and future long-time collaborator Jim Vallance.

Roberta Flack - "I'm The One"
from the album I'm The One (1982)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #42
Songwriters: William Eaton, Ralph MacDonald, William Salter

This sultry soul slice from the singer just missed the top-40 on the pop chart, though it went to #10 on adult contemporary.

Glass Moon - "On A Carousel"
from the album Growing In The Dark (1982)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #50
Songwriters: Allan Clarke, Tony Hicks, Graham Nash

The progressive rock band from North Carolina turns power-pop in this remake of the Hollies hit.

Bill Champlin - "Sara"
from the album Runaway (1981)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #61
Songwriters: Bill Champlin, Alan Thicke

The big bear who joined Chicago had his last pop solo hit with this single written with Growing Pains' Alan Thicke (aka father of Robin)...

That's it for this week's shoulder-pad flashback....have a great night!
