Songoftheday 7/27/13 - There was this new feeling coming out of the streets, everybody's talkin' 'bout it wherever they meet...

Irene Cara - "Breakdance"
from the album What A Feelin' (1983)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11

Today's Song of the Day is by singer Irene Cara, who had the biggest hit of her career in 1983 with the movie title theme "Flashdance...What A Feeling". Releasing a record using the subtitle, Cara went on to have a couple more top-40 hits with "Why Me" and "The Dream (Hold On To Your Dream)" from the movie D.C. Cab. The fourth single from the album would simply crib the name of the latest dance fad, "Breakdance", set to a Giorgio Moroder post-disco beat that had really nothing to do with the music associated with "break dancing". But never mind, it managed to give Irene her next (and so far latest) big hit...

"Breakdance" became Irene's third top-10 hit in June of 1984. It also made the top-20 on the dance chart as well. Irene would have one more hit from the album, "You Were Made For Me", which went to #10 on the adult-contemporary chart, but hasn't appeared on the American charts since.
