8 of the 80s: 6/20/13 (1980)...

Hey gang...I'm a little behind from 4 hours sleep...but chug along with this week's eight nuggets from the 80s, and this time out I'm back to 1980, the year the Cable News Network (CNN) is launched.

Air Supply - "Lost In Love"
from the album Lost In Love (1980)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3
Songwriter: Graham Russell

The soft-rock group that defined the sound of the early 80s got their start with this ethereal production.

Ray, Goodman & Brown - "Special Lady"
from the album Ray, Goodman & Brown (1979)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5
Songwriter: Al Goodman, Harry Ray, Lee Walter

The trio formerly known as the Moments had to lose their name when they switched labels, but in return scored their second top 5 pop/#1 R&;B hit with this classy slow jam.

Larry Gtaham - "One In A Million You"
from the album One In A Million You (1980)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #9
Songwriter: Sam Dees

A wedding-day must have, this vocal workout from the jazz-soul musician is timeless in its power over women (and some men) all over.

Boz Scaggs - "Look What You've Done To Me"
from the album Urban Cowboy (Original Soundtrack) (1980)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #14
Songwriter: Boz Scaggs

One of my favorite records from this year, this romantic yet somewhat haunting ballad proves you don't have to hit power-notes to sell a record.

Natalie Cole - "Someone That I Used To Love"
from the album Don't Look Back (1980)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #21
Songwriters: Gerry Goffin, Michael Messer

For all those who need to get over their lost love, gaining strength inside themselves as the song progresses.

Nicolette Larson & Michael McDonald - "Let Me Go, Love"
from the album In The Nick Of Time (1979)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #35
Songwriters: Michael McDonald, Bonnie Jean Foster

This slice of heaven from the late singer was produced by Ted Templeman, more known for his work with Van Halen at the time.

Dolly Parton - "Starting Over Again"
from the album Dolly, Dolly, Dolly (1980)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #36
Songwriters: Donna Summer, Bruce Sudano

This song, one of Dolly's greatest vocal performances, was written by disco queen Donna Summer with her husband Bruce Sudano, when she was flirting with recording a country album.

Climax Blues Band - "Gotta Have More Love"
from the album Flying The Flag (1980)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #47
Songwriters: Greg Guidry, Randy Guidry, Jeff Silbar

The "bluesy" side of soft-rock is represented by this British band that typified the kind of group successful in the era of adult contemporary.

That's all for this 80s flashback...I'll return tomorrow with another Song of the Day and my top-100 tunes from the week.

"Special Lady" is such an awesome song, but my favorite on here is "Starting Over Again." I think I like the Reba version from '95 just a little bit more, but Dolly's is amazing as well.
