6 of the 60s: 5/15/13 (1965)...

Hey gang...I'm back with another half-dozen nuggets from the 60's, and this time out it's six from 1965, the year West Germany and Israel finally established diplomatic relations.

Gary & The Playboys - "This Diamond Ring"
from the album This Diamond Ring (1965)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1
Songwriters: Bob Brass, Al Kooper, Irwin Levine

Rat-Packer's son pretty much Milli Vanilli'ed himself to #1, as none of the "Playboys" actually played on the record, and his vocals were enhanced by overdubs.

The Gentrys - "Keep On Dancing"from the album Keep On Dancing (1965)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #4
Songwriter: Willie Young

This single from the Memphis septet was notable for its simplicity - the producers just took their recording and repeated it to make the time for a full two-minute single.

The McCoys - "Fever"
from the album Hang On Sloopy (1965)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7
Songwriter: John Davenport

Back when guitar great Rick Derringer was Richard Zehringer, the Indiana pop group covered this vocal nugget and sent it on an acid trip.

The Castaways - "Liar Liar"
from the album Liar, Liar: The Best Of The Castaways (1999)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #12
Songwriter: James Donna

This garage-rock classic featured an otherworldly falsetto from guitarist Robert Folschow.

The Dave Clark Five - "Any Way You Want It"
from the album Coast To Coast (1965)
Billboard Hot 100 peak; #14
Songwriter: Dave Clark

Both Kiss and Tom Petty would end up covering this rave-up by the British Invasion crowdpleasers.

The Fortunes - "Here It Comes Again"
from the album The Fortunes (1965)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27
Songwriters: Barry Mason, Les Reed

This pop group from Birmingham, England charmed with this breezy number that predated the psychedelic rush.

That does it for this week's return to the 60s...tomorrow I'll have 7 more from 1975 and 8 from 1985...
