Brit Sweep: April 14, 2013...

Hey gang, the end of the weekend is here, and it's time to check out the new songs making their way on to the weekly singles charts in the United Kingdom today, after a couple weeks off from vacation. And what a week to come back to....

The top-selling song of the week for the second week in a row is the neo-house anthem "Need U (100 Percent)" by Duke Dumont featuring AME on vocals....

But the big story of the week is the song coming in at #2. Following the death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, an online campaign grew to protest all the horrid things she had done in her career by purchasing the song "Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead" from the Wizard Of Oz soundtrack. And the 50 second or so track almost made it to the top (with some accusing of shenanigans), and lands at a still-respectable #2. The BBC on their chart show countdown didn't play the track per se but when its number came up tied it to a "special news statement" which included playing portions of the song. But really. It's just a 50 second thing. They could have played it and avoided the fuss. But now....on one hand there does seem a misogynist aspect to this finger-flipping to the dead, that nobody gave to, say, Ronald Reagan (although maybe if he died these days it'd be different). But after re-watching the clips of her denigrating gays and lesbians from her Clause 28 days, I have to say "fuck her". Ding the fucking dong.

Scottish singer Nina Nesbitt, who has been opening for Ed Sheeran recently, scores her first top-100 hit all the way at #21 with "Stay Out"...

Coming in at #35 is the punk band Notsensibles, whose "I'm In Love With Margaret Thatcher", which was also featured in the Meryl Streep film The Iron Lady, was also involved in a campaign for sales, but this time by supporters of the former PM. In true right-wing fashion, they misappropriated an actual satirical take on her for their "tribute", which the punkers professed their "love" for Thatcher in the comical sense. Ha!

And proving how crazy this week's charts are, the next debut at #44 is World Wrestling composer Jim Johnston with "ChaChaLaLa (Fandango)", the theme for wrestler "Fandango". No idea what this is about at all.

UK X Factor winners Little Mix are back with the fifth single from their debut album DNA, "How Ya Doin'", at #57....

Well, it was only a matter of time before Korean meme-supreme PSY returned with a new song, and "Gentleman" jumps in at #61.....

London singer Angel is back with his latest, "The World", at #73. Last year he took "Wonderful" to #9...(NSFW)

Dutch jazz-pop singer Caro Emerald is a fave of mine, and her newest single "Tangled Up" enters the top-100 here at #81, and it's my "Brit Pick of the Week"...

The final new entry at #94 is the former US #1 R&B hit "Pour It Up" by Rihanna...

That's it for tonight....thanks for stopping by, I'll be back tomorrow with another Song of the Day, Part two of this week's Album Sweep, and my Robbed Hit of the Week. Cheers!
