Brit Sweep: February 24, 2013...

Hey gang, it's time to close out the weekend with the latest songs making the grade over in Great Britain this week according to their official sales charts...

The top-selling single in the UK this week is the vocal group One Direction with this year's official "Red Nose Day" song for the Comic Relief charity. It's a "mash-up" cover of two influential pop-punk songs of the late 70s (way before these chaps were born), "One Way Or Another" by Blondie and the Undertones' "Teenage Kicks". The result, titled "One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks)" becomes the quintet's third #1 British hit, and sold over 100,000 copies in its first week. The original of the Undertones' track went to #31 in 1978, while Blondie's song never was released before in the UK, and you'll be seeing it later down the post...

The only other debut in the top-40 is the Irish pop/rock group the Script, with third single from their third album, #3, "If You Could See Me Now". The first from that set, "Hall Of Fame", became their first to top the UK chart in 2012...(NSFW)

Entering at #44 with "Love Me" is American rapper Lil' Wayne, who has three top-40 hits in this country so far, with 2011's Mirror the biggest so far reaching #17...The track features Drake and Future as well..(NSFW)

British neo-prog-rock kings Muse are back at #58 with "Supremacy", the fourth single from their excellent The 2nd Law album. The band has gone to the top-10 here four times with "Supermassive Black Hole" reaching #4 in 2006..

Veteran soul rocker Joe Cocker storms in at #64 with his newest, "Fire It Up". The British vocalist topped the British charts in 1968 (almost 45 years ago) with his cover of the Beatles' "With A Little Help From My Friends"...

British newcomer Tom Odell, who the press has been propping up as Taylor Swift's next conquest, debuts at #82 with "Can't Pretend". He won the British Critics Choice award last December...

Emeli Sande performed her songs "Clown" and "Next To Me" at the BRITs Awards last Wednesday, and the release of the medley has made the chart at #90...

Frank Ocean makes his second top-100 appearance in Britain with his Grammy-nominated song "Thinkin Bout You"...

...and finally, after 36 years, Blondie's original version of "One Way Or Another" makes its way on to the chart at #98. They have topped the British chart six times, the last with "Maria" in 1999...

That's it for the night...thanks for stopping by, and I'll be back tomorrow with another Song of the Day, Candletime, and this week's "Robbed Hit". Good night!
