Brit Sweep: January 27, 2013...

Hey gang, the weekend's coming to a close, so it's time to check out the new songs making their way on to the official singles chart in the UK this week.

The top-selling song this week is the first top-40 single (and natch 1st chart-topper) for Dutch DJ duo Bingo Players with "Get Up (Rattle)". They previously made it to #44 with their Brenda Russell-cribbing "Cry (Just A Little)", which was in itself sampled by Flo Rida for his top-10 single "I Cry". The new track takes one of their previous raves, "Rattle", and adds rap from the Asian-American group Far East Movement and a video featuring the most bad-ass fowl you'll ever see. Grade: B-

At #11 is English singer Amelia Lily, who came in third on the eighth series of the UK X Factor, and since then scored a #2 single last year with "You Bring Me Joy". She returns just under the top-10 with the assertive "Shut Up (And Give Me Whatever You Got". Grade: C

The third single from Ellie Goulding's sophomore album Halcyon, "Explosions", comes in at the same rank as her last charting song, "Figure 8", at #33.She has had three top-5 hits in her native country so far, with her cover of Elton John's "Your Song" reaching #2 in 2010. Grade: B

The female vocal group that beat Amelia Lily on X Factor, Little Mix, see their fourth single from their debut album DNA, "Change Your Life", jump into the top-100 in the UK at #36. The first two releases, their cover of "Cannonball" and "Wings", went to #1.Grade: C+

Newcomer Droideka, probably named after the destroyer droids from the film Star Wars III: Attack Of The Clones, lands at #42 with "Get Hyper".Grade: B

Vocalist and critic's fave Jessie Ware re-released her track "110%" which contained an unauthorized sample of rapper Big Punisher's "Dream Shatterer". Now titled "If You're Never Gonna Move" is back in at #54. She had previously taken "Wildest Moments" to #46 in Britain (and #3 in Belgium) last year. Grade: A-

Iconic ska group Madness return at #88 with "Never Knew Your Name", from their tenth studio set Oui Oui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da, which was a top-10 record here in October of last year. The band has had 15 top-10 singles in the UK so far, with "House Of Fun" their sole #1 in 1982. Grade: B

Welsh rockers Stereophonics are also back at #90 with "Indian Summer".  It's from their first album in four years, the upcoming Graffiti On The Train. Since their debut in 1997, they have racked up ten top-10 singles, with "Dakota" topping the chart in 2005. Grade: B-

Hadouken!, a dance-rock group from Leeds, have the final debut at #97 with "Levitate",  no doubt helped by the viral video compilation clip using the track called "People Are Awesome 2013". They previously made the top-40 here in 2007 with "Liquid Lives". Grade: A-

That's it for tonight....I'll be back tomorrow with another Song of the Day, Candletime, part two of this week's "album sweep", and this week's "robbed hit". Cheers!
