7 of the 70s: 1/10/13...

Hey gang, after a holiday break I'm back with another seven nuggets from the 70s, and this time out it's 1971, the year the Nasdaq debuts in the financial world.

Rod Stewart - "Maggie May"
from the album Every Picture Tells A Story (1971)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1

As Rod turns 68 today, his breakthrough solo hit was about when he was much younger, and source material for the original Cougartown.

The Partridge Family - "Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted"from the album Up To Date (1971)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6

The song David Cassidy hated, it actually is one of my favorite songs of theirs, and gave them a top-10 hit to prove that "I Think I Love You" wasn't a fluke.

Gladys Knight & The Pips - "If I Were Your Woman"
from the album If I Were Your Woman (1971)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #9

The most epic moment in Gladys' career, co-written by Gloria Jones of "Tainted Love" fame. She truly was Motown's best female singer.

Richie Havens - "Here Comes The Sun"
from the album Alarm Clock (1971)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #16

The folk singer stole the show at Woodstock with this masterful remake of the George Harrison classic.

The Supremes - "Nathan Jones"
from the album Touch (1971)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #16

The trio's post-Diana hit had newcomer Jean Terrell, Mary Wilson, and Cindy Birdsong sharing the lead and inspiring the group vocal style Bananarama would pay homage to remaking the song in the 80s.

Bobby Sherman - "The Drum"
from the album Portrait Of Bobby (1971)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #29

Justin Bieber, welcome to your future. Though I think Bobby made it out of the teen idol phase better than you will.

Francis Lai - "Theme From Love Story"
from the album Love Story (Original Soundtrack) (1971)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #31

The only Oscar nabbed by the sappy Ryan O'Neal flick, the French composer went on to score some soft-porn movies in the 70s like Emmanuelle 2.

That does it for now....I'll return later with 8 more from 1981...
