6 of the 60s: 11/28/12...

I'm back with another half-dozen nuggets from the 60s, and this time I'm back to 1968, the year Planet Of The Apes debuts in theaters...

The Lemon Pipers - "Green Tambourine"
from the album Green Tambourine (1967)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1

The missing link between bubblegum pop and psychedelica.

1910 Fruitgum Co. - "1,2,3 Red Light"
from the album 1,2,3 Red Light (1968)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5

The guy with the two tambourines is the best person in the world. I need to be that guy with the two tambourines.

Vanilla Fudge - "You Keep Me Hangin' On"
from the album Vanilla Fudge (1967)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6

This is the prototype of every American Idol/Voice/X Factor "change up the song" version ever.

Ohio Express - "Chewy Chewy"
from the album Chewy Chewy (1968)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #15

Possibly the theme song to the "bubblegum" movement, this blatantly rips off the Beach Boys like a 7 year old shoplifter.

Strawberry Alarm Clock - "Tomorrow"
from the album Wake Up....It's Tomorrow (1968)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #23

Another psychedelic-bubblegum hybrid, the LA band appeared in Beyond The Valley Of the Dolls.

The Avant-Garde - "Naturally Stoned"
from the single (1968)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #40

This pun-filled title was written by duo member Chuck Woolery, more known now for his game show hosting and right-wing lunacy than his music.

That's it for this week's 60s flashback...tonight I'll have this weeks "Aussie Sweep", then tomorrow it's 7 from 1978 and eight from 1988...
