Brit Sweep: October 21, 2012...

Hey gang, the weekend's coming to a close, so time to check out the new songs selling over in the United Kingdom, according to their official charts.

The top seller this week in Britain is the latest single by Scottish DJ/producer Calvin Harris, with "Sweet Nothing" featuring Florence Welsh of Florence + The Machine. It's the second time their pairing has made it to #1 this year - "Spectrum (Say My Name)" topped the chart back in July. The video for this is amazing - the best from either of them yet...

Entering at #6 is the "pseudo" boyband Lawson, with their third consecutive top-10 single from their debut album Chapman Square, "Standing In The Dark". I say "pseudo" because the four members are young and cute, and they sing harmonic pop-rock like peers The Wanted, but they also play their own instruments. Their last single, "Taking Over Me", went to #3 earlier this year...

Rebecca Ferguson, who came in second on the UK's X Factor behind Matt Cardle, come in at #15 with the second top-40 UK hit from her excellent debut album Heaven, "Backtrack". She took "Nothing's Real But Love" to #10 last year...

Justin Bieber rockets in at #20 with "Beauty And A Beat" featuring Nicki Minaj, the third official single from his Believe album. The first, "Boyfriend", is his biggest UK hit to date, peaking at #2...

Another singing competition runner-up, Tyler James from The Voice UK, gets his fourth British top-40 hit and second from his sophomore set, "Single Tear", at #28. In 2005, he took "Foolish" to #16...

The fifth song and fourth promotional preview track from Taylor Swift's upcoming CD Red, "State Of Grace", comes in at #36...all five have made the top-40, with "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" making it to #4...

One notch below Taylor at #37 is the first top-100 UK single for British indie-rock group Everything Everything with "Cough Cough"...

British electronic-pop icons Pet Shop Boys are at #44 with the second single from their beautiful Elysium album, "Leaving". Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have had four #1 hits in Britain, their last being "Heart" in 1988...

American folk-rock trio the Lumineers come on at #45 with their debut single, "Ho Hey"...

Electronica act Chase & Status enter at #68 with "Big Man" featuring vocals by Liam Bailey, who also sang on their biggest hit, "Blind Faith", which peaked at #5...

Singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran arrives at #79 with "Give Me Love", the eighth song from his debut album "+" to make the top-100 here. His classic "The A Team" went to #3 last year...

Pink follows up her #3 UK hit "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" at #87 with "Try"....

The reigning British royalty of rock and roll, the Rolling Stones, return with a single from their upcoming 50th anniversary retrospective Grrrr! called "Doom and Gloom" at #97. It's a scathing attack on the current warmongering British administration, and just and rocking as ever. In their career the band has topped the UK chart eight times, from "It's All Over Now" in 1964 to "Honky Tonk Women" in 1969....

That's it for tonight....thanks so much for stopping by, please check back tomorrow for another "song of the day", candletime, part two of this week's "Album Sweep", and the "robbed hit" of the week. Cheers!
